“The world needs more great hip-hop games. Thankfully, Floor Kids is one such game”
Today, visionary scratch DJ and producer Kid Koala (aka Eric San) shares a new single titled “Big Trouble In Little Battle” with CLASH. Pulled from his upcoming Floor Kids Original Video Game Soundtrack set for release on April 27th via Arts & Crafts, the song offers another taste of the 42-track soundtrack, featuring 71 minutes of original instrumental hip-hop and break music from the award-winning video game, Floor Kids. He comments:
“Some of my favorite tracks to play at break events are from the scores of lost and forgotten 70s Kung Fu flicks. Many of the martial arts flicks of that era have some of the wildest funk grooves playing during the chase or action sequences. I tried to create that type of energy and tone on ‘Big Trouble In Little Battle.’
It is a track that is unlocked in the subway station of the Floor Kids Video Game. I’m super excited for the Floor Kids soundtrack to be released on vinyl for the DJs so they can loop 2 copies at their next break cypher. And for the non DJs, I’ve been told the upbeat battle tracks serve as great motivational music when you’re quickly tidying up your house, going to the gym, or cooking up short order plates in the kitchen!”
In anticipation of the release, Kid Koala previously shared the funk/jazz influenced “Five Spot Stomp,” second single “Build Your Crew,” and the 18-minute “Floor Kids Megamix,” a raucous blend of cuts from the soundtrack mixed live on three turntables.
Kid Koala will hit the road for his Vinyl Vaudeville: Floor Kids Edition tour on April 26th, a special expanded version of his road-tested variety show, complete with dancers, brass playing ants, 6 foot MPCs, 9 foot ogres, 20 foot spiders, robots, and more. The tour will also bring a traveling arcade of custom Floor Kids game consoles, so fans can battle their friends before the show even starts. See below for a full date listing + tickets are available here.
Floor Kids is an original concept by award-winning animator bboy JonJon and Kid Koala himself, capturing the essence of what makes “breaking” an artform unlike any other. Adding another dimension to the universe of multimedia projects San has created over a twenty-year career, Kid Koala scores this journey across every era of the break, from silky ‘70s funk, to thumping ‘80s 808s, granular ‘90s 12bit hip-hop, and 00’s synth funk. Currently available on Nintendo Switch, Floor Kids will be porting soon to PS4, XBOX, and STEAM.
The game has already garnered several awards for its interactive gameplay, innovative control system, and vibrant animation. Now, Kid Koala’s soundtrack is getting its due, most recently earning Best Game Audio at Indie Prize.
The Floor Kids Original Video Game Soundtrack is available for preorder in limited edition 2LP gatefold vinyl and digital formats. An exclusive DELUXE vinyl edition including video game download for Nintendo Switch has been launched today (limited to 100 copies).
Kid Koala has toured with the likes of Radiohead, Beastie Boys, Arcade Fire, A Tribe Called Quest, and DJ Shadow. He has contributed to film scores and soundtracks for Shaun Of The Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Baby Driver, and composed music for Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Sesame Street, and the National Film Board of Canada. His most recent album, Music To Draw To: Satellite, an ambient epic featuring Emilíana Torrini, was nominated for the JUNO Award for Electronic Album Of The Year.
