Visionary scratch DJ and producer Kid Koala (aka Eric San) is preparing to release his Floor Kids Original Video Game Soundtrack on April 27th via Arts & Crafts – a 42-track project featuring 71 minutes of original instrumental hip-hop and break music from the award-winning video game, Floor Kids.
In anticipation, Kid Koala shares the 18-minute “Floor Kids Megamix” – a raucous blend of cuts from the soundtrack mixed live on three turntables. The Megamix premieres today with Self-Titled, and is out tomorrow on digital services.
“I recorded this shortly after receiving the test pressings of the Floor Kids Video Game Soundtrack vinyl,” San comments. “This is a live mix that will give you a taste of some of the grooves and battle tracks on the record. I labeled the 12 o’clock point on each record with some stickers and just hit record, needle dropping, quick cueing, and back spinning loops as you would do when deejaying at a break battle. There are also a few spoken word elements from the games story cutscenes scratched in there, which reveal some of the in-game philosophy that will help you become a better player/dancer/human!”
Floor Kids is an original concept by award-winning animator bboy JonJon and Kid Koala himself, capturing the essence of what makes “breaking” an artform unlike any other. Adding another dimension to the universe of multimedia projects San has created over a twenty-year career, Kid Koala scores this journey across every era of the break, from silky ‘70s funk, to thumping ‘80s 808s, granular ‘90s 12bit hip-hop, and 00’s synth funk.
The game has already garnered several awards for its interactive gameplay, innovative control system, and vibrant animation. Now, Kid Koala’s soundtrack is getting its due, most recently earning Best Game Audio at Indie Prize. The Floor Kids Original Video Game Soundtrack is available for preorder in limited edition 2LP gatefold vinyl and digital formats, and includes a download of the “Floor Kids Megamix.”
Kid Koala will hit the road for his Vinyl Vaudeville: Floor Kids Edition tour on April 26th, a special expanded version of his road-tested variety show, including a traveling arcade. See below for a full date listing + tickets are available here.
Kid Koala has toured with the likes of Radiohead, Beastie Boys, Arcade Fire, A Tribe Called Quest, and DJ Shadow. He has contributed to film scores and soundtracks for Shaun Of The Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Baby Driver, and composed music for Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Sesame Street, and the National Film Board of Canada. His most recent album, Music To Draw To: Satellite, an ambient epic featuring Emilíana Torrini, was nominated for the JUNO Award for Electronic Album Of The Year.
