Since the turn of the decade, L-Vis 1990 has been a key figure in the underground as a DJ, producer and co- founder of the heavily influential Night Slugs label. Now, he melds his skills as a producer and A&R for vocalists, crafting the 11-track “12 Thousand Nights” mixtape to represent his progressive vision of hip-hop, r&b, dancehall and pop music. The title 12 Thousand Nights is not just a play on “One Thousand and One Nights,” but a nod to the producer’s age; in many ways, the mixtape is the culmination of his life and career in music to this point.
While spending so much time living, working and playing between New York, London and Los Angeles, the producer met and recorded dozens of budding artists along with longtime friends and collaborators Sinjin Hawke, Jimmy Edgar and NA – all of whom contributed additional production. The goal was to create “vignettes” about each vocalist’s world, and the result was a mixtape that’s a cross- pollination of sounds from his hometown London, and the influences he picked up whilst living in New York.
It bounds from the metallic, R&B jam “Flexin”, a pissed-off kiss-off featuring London’s Tali Whoah, to pneumatic, Neptunesque club rap tracks featuring L.A. crew Pink Dollaz (which birthed twin duo Cam & China), Awful Records rep Lord Narf, Houston character Tiko Texa$ and Mexican-American upstart OHNO. L-Vis finds particular harmony with Mista Silva on a trio of Afrobeats- and dancehall-inspired tracks: the romantic, “Sunlight” (featuring Warp artist Gaika), the afterhours jam “Do My Ting,” and the buoyant, synth-pop-kissed “121.” True to his UK roots, L Vis also delivers a pair of ragged grime infused tracks, “Yeah Yeah” featuring Flohio and Cassive and “None of That” featuring Eddie Fiasco, before closing the tape with “Honey,” an ode to female pleasure featuring Venice Beach debutante Sheera and Qween Beat talent Ash B.
The making of 12 Thousand Nights is a story of random connections, blunted rappers, and old friends reconnecting in new towns. But mostly, it is a bold statement about what L-Vis 1990 is capable of as both a producer and A&R. “This is where I’m at right now,” he says. “I can’t just be held to one thing.”
