“[‘Serpent’]…a head-bobbing post-punk groove…
serving up a pulsing beat to navigate through knotty friendships.” – KCRW’s Today’s Top Tune

“’Serpent’ hearkens back to the mid-’00s post-punk revival.” – BrooklynVegan

“[‘Stay Safe!’]… is constantly engaging, the band’s textures shifting from one groove to the next
with a luminous bounce.” – Post-Trash

“Hypnotic synth work, punk moxy guitar, funk-tinged bass, and motorik drumming
make the album a full meal deal.” – Range

“[‘Anyway’]…an embrace like silk, but a bite like a choir of knives…synths bleep-blooping, guitars fuzzed in molten silver, and an urge to dance shooting through its veins” – So Young

“Try Again” [is] a post-disco burner replete with cryptic lyrics, hypnotizing synths,
a motorik rhythm and wacky guitar hooks.” – Exclaim!

On Friday, Montreal-based La Sécurité will share their debut album Stay Safe! via Mothland. Ahead of time, today, the band shared a music video for album standout “Hot Topic.” An ode to unapologetic female solidarity, the track exemplifies the band’s sound featuring a lurching, disconcerting, yet endlessly danceable groove that provides a sinister dance-punk edge to frontwoman Éliane Viens-Synnott’s wry lyricism.

The song’s genesis is deeply entwined with that of the music video; the music was initially crafted to score an extended avant-garde dance piece also called “Hot Topic,” choreographed by Éliane and shot in a single continuous take. Watch it in full here. She explains, “The concept was to choreograph a dance piece to be shot as a sequence to capture the ephemeral elements present in performing arts. Drawing influences from the Riot Grrrl movement, I created a dance piece where five women take up all the space on a dancefloor, unapologetically. We can dress how we want, enjoy our night out however that looks for us and we don’t care what you think.”

After completing the piece, the band edited down the song into the version that appears on Stay Safe!. The music video, too, is an abridged version of the original dance piece. The song and video are a testament to the band’s unique nature as a collaborative, artistically open group with varied and differing creative ambitions and entanglements. The ecstatic magic of La Sécurité comes when these interests are brought together into a radical milieu.

La Sécurité’s art-punk is equal parts jumpy beats, off-kilter arrangements, and minimalistic melodic hooks, all run through an insomniac filter — the result of excessive exposure to Montreal’s neon lights. The music is eminently sharp and danceable, while the lyrics share the feminist community-centric ethos of the Riot Grrrl movement. “It’s not just fun and games… it also bites. It’s catchy earworms delivered with a punk attitude,” guitarist Melissa Di Menna says.

After years of working with their many different projects (Choses Sauvages, Laurence-Anne, Silver Dapple, DATES, Pressure Pin, etc.), the motley bunch now meanders the fringes of punk, new wave and krautrock, mischievously flouting stylistic form every chance they get. Stay Safe!’s album art, designed by Di Menna, reflects this approach; scattered entities coming together and falling into place organically.

Since coming together in the Spring of 2022, the five-piece has been invited to perform at SXSW, FME, Phoque OFF, Taverne Tour and DISTORSION Psych Fest, and has shared the stage with the likes of Automatic, Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp, TVOD, Margaritas Poridas, Civic and Annie-Claude Deschênes (Duchess Says). For their first full-length album, the collective turned to producer Samuel Gemme at Gamma Recording Studio (CorridorPopulation II), crafting songs that are empowering and flush with urgency, yet also reflective and at times tinged with melancholy. Stay Safe! is manic, yet surprisingly laid-back, and should no doubt strike a chord with fans of Le Tigre, Automatic, Wet Leg, Devo, E.S.G. or The B-52’s.
