Lacuna Coil – ‘Broken Crown Halo’ (Century Media Records)

‘Broken Crown Halo’ is the seventh studio album by Italian metal band Lacuna Coil, and was released on March 31 2014 via Century Media Records. The album was produced by Jay Baumgardner. Broken Crown Halo is also the last album with drummer Cristiano “Criz” Mozzati and guitarist Cristiano “Pizza” Migliore, who retired from the band on February 14, 2014.

Lacuna Coil have been solidly releasing albums for the past several years, 2012’s Dark Adrenaline was one of the better albums that they have released. To be honest I’ve heard very little in the run-up to release and that’s a good considering I will have heard a single or two. I first heard the band and “Our Truth” on a film soundtrack (can’t remember what film) and from there I went on to purchase 2009’s Shallow Life.

So then, how does Broken Crown Halo sound? One thing I notice straight away is that it seems like Dark Adrenaline on crack when it comes to the guitar riffs – something which was quintessential on the last album. From the first track “Nothing Stands In Our Way” there are plenty of guitar riffs, bass lines and tight to-the-point drumming, although the music in itself is what I would call “simple” – intro, verse, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus, end.

The interplay between vocalists Ferro and Scabbia is fantastic, they seem to have learned from Dark Adrenaline on how to make their voices sound like one, instead of sounding jarring and disjointed. If Dark Adrenaline was a hint at where they would go, Broken Crown Halo is the answer to the question, and with its awesome artwork I know I’m going to like this album. Again it’s the entire package that I like especially with the album, though depending on which version you choose.

I feel that this album is a lot darker than Dark Adrenaline because of the guitar tones, mainly, and the overall atmosphere of the album. Dark Adrenaline was also a massive step up the previous album, Shallow Life. However this is an album which took it’s time to grow on me and, considering it has received good reviews in the press from what I’ve read, I was a little unsure (lately switching to my Sony headphones) I eventually grew to like the album. At the moment I can’t pick out any select tracks or favourite tracks, as the album is still fresh in my mind.

Lacuna Coil are one of those of the bands that throughout the years they have rapidly changed their sound. This had led to a bit of conflict in the fans’ eyes, with them suffering a damned-if-you-damned-if-you-don’t scenario. I definitely feel that Broken Crown Halo is a step in the right direction but is on the same level as Dark Adrenaline, but not better than it. I don’t understand the negativity towards this – seeing a lot of comments and such all over the internet – as I’ve seen comments praising the band and also, at the same time, saying that this is a ‘disappointing release’.

Overall: I feel that Broken Crown Halo is another solid release by Lacuna Coil. After Dark Adrenaline it was easy to see where this band would go, and I feel that the band can do no wrong in my eyes. There are already so many great songs on this album, although it’s hard to tell if this will be an album to remember come the end of 2014. 8.5 / 10
