LARRY AND HIS FLASK ‘Hobo’s Lament’ (Xtra Mile Recordings)

Xtra Mile Record latest signings Larry And His Flask unleash their new EP ‘Hobo’s Lament’ arrives in the hopefully warmer days of May. As you can already predict their label bow is a strong marker of the increasingly varied approach to the grit-driven folk rock of very recent years.

The six-piece from Oregon, USA with plan to release their EP ‘Hobo’s Lament’ digitally back on 22nd April 2013 then with a limited numbered CD EP on 6th May. So if your a little familiar with the band already I guess that’s not too surprising having toured together in the States, the Flask (as the band’s expanding army of fans calls them) come to the UK and Europe to support Frank Turner on his sold out album tour in April as well play a HUGE run of headline shows. Full list below, better bring a packed lunch!

Formed by brothers Jamin and Jesse Marshall in 2003, the Flask spent its first half-decade stuck in a primordial, punk-rock goop, where a blood-sweat-and-beers live show took priority over things like notes and melodies. Don’t misunderstand: The band was (somewhat) skilled and an absolute joy to watch, but the goal was always the party over perfection. More recently, however, Larry And His Flask have gone from crawl to sprint at breakneck speed. The band’s new songs are a blurry blend of lightning fast string-band picking, gorgeous nods to old-school country, and sublime multi-part harmonies, all presented through a prism of punk chaos.

There are still strong punk ethics, Dropkick Murphys-esque approach, methinks on say, ‘Swing’ but that is understood, from the EP opener ‘Big Ride’ or the title track, that the band have not moved too far down a different road. this But its starting to become a pointless effort, the ‘Hobo’s Lament’ is what everybody knows already, something to herald, support and to provide everyone with a varied soundtrack to the days ahead. Enough said? Can’t leave you without introducing the band  Ian Cook – Vocals + Guitar, Jamin Marshall – Vocals + Percussion, Jeshua Marshall – Vocals + Double Bass + Baritone + Harmonicas, Dallin Bulkley – Vocals + Guitar + Not Guilty, Andrew Carew – Vocals + Banjo + Trombone, Kirk Skatvold – Vocals + Mandolin + Trumpet all deserve a mention, from 4/4 folk punk attack to New Orleans style brass bursts, strange to congratulate a musician on his fingering, especially in this day and age, but the banjo of Andrew Carew deserves much  praise in a non-patronising way, as do all of the six, ‘Hobo’s Lament’ works on multiple levels, a noteworthy release. 8.8/10
