LISTEN: LEYYA – ‘Zoo’
“Zoo” starts off with a flourish of sitar and gentle vocals, but when that hook comes in it’s all systems go, with brass and bouncy percussion.”

“Marco Kleebauer’s electro beats collide with the fragile, soft voice of singer Sophie Lindinger, creating music that sends a chill down the spine.”

LEYYA shares new single ‘Zoo’ out now via LasVegas Records/Universal Music. ‘Zoo’ was premiered by Pigeons & Planes who have tipped the single as “an Indie Summer Hit”. The single is currently been featured on Complex’s homepage, received airplay from BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and BBC Music 6’s Lauren Laverne as well as being added to Radio 1 Playlist in Germany and to Austrian FM4’s Radio Charts.
After releasing their debut album “Spanish Disco” in 2015, the rise of Austrian duo LEYYA (Sophie Lindinger and Marco Kleebauer) has been astronomical. Touring through Europe, playing the big festival stages and seeing their hit single ‘Superego’ being played on radios, TVs and movie theatres – as well as racking up more than 2 million plays on Spotify and over 400,000 views on Youtube – they have garnered widespread critical acclaim as well as commercial success. With support from Huw Stephens on BBC Radio 1, Lauren Laverne on BBC Music6, John Kennedy on Radio X and KCRW. as well as being featured in several advertisement campaigns, the band continued their trail among Europe’s tastemaker festivals with shows at The Great Escape (Brighton, UK), Liverpool Sound City (Liverpool, UK), Tallinn Music Week (Tallinn, EE), MaMa Event (Paris, FR) and Electronic Beats at Reeperbahn Festival (Hamburg, DE) – before finally headlining Popfest (Vienna, AT) back home, where they played to a crowd of 20,000 in front of the famous Karlskirche in Vienna’s beautiful City Centre.
With a sound described as “starting exactly where Portishead ended up” (Radio FM4), LEYYA’s performance at Iceland Airwaves was called one of the “most exciting” on display by Consequence of Sound; while Musikexpress was similarly enthusiastic about their show at Eurosonic Nooderslag, calling it “The best concert of this year’s Eurosonic Festival.”
New single ‘Zoo’ shows that LEYYA are anything but predictable. Their erstwhile sound, with its dark, melancholic tones, is almost washed away from this bright, energetic track, as the Austrian duo expands their repertoire, including a touch of India as well as the classic late-1960s Liverpool beat. As Sophie Lindinger’s voice softly sings, “Don’t believe what they say about me […] Don’t give a shit, that they talk about me,” the listener is taken on a free-spirited and interesting musical adventure, that will see sitar lines meld with rich brassy textures and subtle electronic ambience. Speaking about the track, LEYYA comment that, “The Idea for ‘Zoo’ came while watching a sitar lesson on the internet – it set a certain mood we wanted to transfer to our song, as well, so it’s quite meditative, but combined with our way of songwriting.”
