Today, celebrated Hull alternative four-piece LIFE share ‘My Yan’, the final single to be taken from their forthcoming new album ABSTRACT / NATURAL ahead of its release on June 19th via EMI North and Launchpad+.
Recalling some of the great euphoric indie-rock of the early 2000s, ‘My Yan’ simultaneously finds LIFE at their most dynamic and carefree. Driven by a keen sense of purpose from the outset via Lydia Palmeira and Stewart Baxter’s motoring rhythm section, and neatly embellished by Mick Sanders’ glinting guitar harmonics, the track beautifully unfolds into a breezy meditation on love and freedom. From there, a dreamlike middle section knits together shimmering guitar and bass lines beneath lush waves of delay before frontman Mez Sanders-Green’s vocals draw everything back in, rising with a shoegaze-like intensity before arriving at a soaring, joyous conclusion. Like the majority of the songs found on ABSTRACT / NATURAL, the lyrics were written by Mez during his many adventures in the outdoors, on this occasion while exploring the fells and lush pastoral surroundings of the Lake District.
Speaking on the track, he elaborates: “This track is a love song. Yan in old Cumbrian means ‘one’ so I’m saying ‘The One’. This is the band’s favourite track from the album. It’s really dynamic, especially the middle-eight with all of its space and dreamlike textures that build to a monumental outro that we hope sounds like a journey towards new beginnings. Here’s a fun fact: shepherds in the Lake District counted sheep by going yan, twee, tree, fower (1,2,3,4). I wrote the lyrics in the lakes.”

ABSTRACT / NATURAL is LIFE’s fourth album and arguably their most ambitious work to date; a record that expands the band’s collective horizons while firmly keeping their DIY ethos and hometown roots intact. Mez, whose background as a youth work practitioner has seen him dedicate years of life supporting young people in Hull, has long found writing inspiration and solace over long-distance walks and adventures. During the project’s inception, he kept returning to a book of poetry he was writing on these travels, transforming his experiences in the hills and fells into an imagined world; one where genuine personal stories intertwine with folklore, myth and a cast of characters drawn directly from the rugged landscapes he encounters on the way.

Recorded at The Moon Factory, the band’s own studio on the banks of the Humber (a space they built themselves and now run as a creative hub for emerging Northern artists),  ABSTRACT / NATURAL was produced by Stewart Baxter and Oliver Varga, mixed by James Kenosha and mastered by Stephen Kerrison. Championed by BBC 6 Music with continued support from Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens, Chris Hawkins and more, LIFE remain one of the most distinct and community-rooted bands in British music.
