HONNE have today premiered ‘I Got You ◑’ (ft. Nana Rogues) the first official single from their forthcoming second album, as well as new track ‘Forget Me Not ◐’. ‘Love Me / Love Me Not’, will see a release on August 24th via Tatemae Recordings /Atlantic Records, with an extensive live plot also confirmed (featuring a headline date at London’s Brixton Academy on November 24th).
‘I Got You’ is a sun-kissed, R&B-tinged ode to romantic escapism from HONNE, featuring Nana Rogues (who co-wrote and produced ‘Passionfruit’ for Drake and has also collaborated with the likes of Skepta, Mabel and Raye). Slow-jam album closer ‘Forget Me Not’, meanwhile, again shows off a darker, more reflective side to HONNE, on an album – ‘Love Me / Love Me Not’ – which stresses the importance of highs and lows in those lives lived at their fullest.
The split-concept at the heart of HONNE’s much-anticipated second album, ‘Love Me / Love Me Not’ – is currently being explored with the unusual plan to drop two tracks a month into release, exploring the duality within the duo’s music (and band-name). On each release, one side explore life’s positives – love, nostalgia and contentment (Love Me ◑) and the other half life’s great difficulties – heartbreak, anxiety and grief (Love Me Not ◑). All of this is pulled together in an album that truly showcases HONNE’s immaculately-produced, instantly-identifiable sound: broadening out into new territories (inspiration this time came from the likes of Kaytranada, BadBadNotGood, Pharrell and Dr Dre) alongside some special guests, such as Nana Rogues, Georgia, Tom Misch, Anna of the North, House Gospel Choir and Rueben James.
HONNE’s sometimes-awkward, always-positive portraits of 21st century romance, masculinity and modern city living have seen them bring together a diverse community of audiences around the world: see over half a billion streams, sold-out tours, and several surprises along the way (see a triple-platinum album in South Korea). And despite testing new boundaries, ‘Love Me / Love Me Not’ ultimately sees the band’s earliest ambitions come into even clearer focus. They cite the group’s name (“Honne” meaning your true feelings, those you keep to yourself), the name of their early record label (“Tatemae”, which reflects what you display in public), plus the fact that this dichotomy between an online persona and actual reality has become starker since when they first started making music. “Those two sides have been rooted in us from the beginning, but now is the first time we’ve truly demonstrated it. One doesn’t exist without the other, and so this time these songs have to be there together. A lot of films and TV shows either explore the good or bad, but we wanted to show a balance and the grey space.” And it’s in those in-between spaces that HONNE have truly found themselves, and – with ‘Love Me / Love Me Not ‘ – a work of timely, timeless songwriting.
