LONELYSPECK DELIVERS STUNNING NEW SINGLE ‘BRINE’
+ ABYSSAL BODY EP OUT NEXT MONTH
‘Eclectic and extremely distinctive, their sound intelligently balances between leftfield and pop sensibilities.’ – Dummy Mag—Lonelyspeck has returned to the spotlight this year, with their new musical direction showcasing a unique blend of genres. That influence is best found on their newest release ‘Brine’, out today via Good Manners Records.
The third and final single from their upcoming EP Abyssal Body, ‘Brine’ once again balances a range of sounds and styles perfectly, with the result a brilliant alt-pop release. Abyssal Body is a homage to Lonelyspeck’s musical background – from 2000s metal and alternative rock to hyper-pop artists like Charli XCX and SOPHIE, with ‘Brine’ another indication of the EP’s incredible scope and quality.

Of the new single, Lonelyspeck states; At the bottom of the ocean, shifting salt deposits and primordial chemicals create underwater lakes known as brine pools. Communities of shellfish and bacteria thrive along the mineral-rich edges of these pools, but any sea life that ventures into the toxic liquid, such as scavengers seeking an easy meal, will be killed instantly and embalmed in the salt. It’s at once an ancient life source and a stagnant, suffocating mire in the remote abyssal depths. In Brine, this setting is a manifestation of the feelings of dissociation that come from repressing and not knowing oneself. Once accustomed to this place, the familiarity is almost a comfort, and prospects of either staying or leaving are equally daunting.

Lonelyspeck is the project of Adelaide-based singer, songwriter, producer and visual artist Sione Teumohenga. Freely yet cohesively mixing eclectic styles, their distinctive sonic palette emphasises a morphing, hyperreal sense of space and texture while remaining grounded in a strong pop sensibility.
After a quietly acclaimed debut in 2014’s Presence EP (an early release on Vegyn’s visionary London label PLZ Make It Ruins), Lonelyspeck set about honing their songcraft towards a more focused follow-up, which would emerge in 2017 as Lave, a five-track EP released through Sydney label TEEF. Its momentous singles ‘All My Skin on the Air’ and ‘Happy New Year’ saw additions across Triple J, FBi, 3RRR and 4ZZZ, with the buzz leading to a Triple J Unearthed-selected performance at Laneway Festival 2017 as well as a string of support slots for artists as diverse as Perfume Genius, Nosaj Thing and The Dillinger Escape Plan.
Since 2018 they have been working on an ambitiously genre-bending third release, due in 2019 via Good Manners Records.‘BRINE’ OUT NOW Stream / DownloadPraise for LonelyspeckLonelyspeck’s songs demonstrate just how much strength can be found in vulnerability– Double Ja hyperreal daydream– SniffersThe many layers are encoded with meaning– VICEspacious, otherworldly and intimate– Broadsheetit’ll have you completely hooked in no time– Pilerats
