new video for ‘My Captain’

‘My Captain, which draws from the queer origin story of 19th Century figures Captain Moonlite and James Nesbitt, expresses ideas of rebirth through the body of another, and the utopian desire to be liberated through queerness from the oppression of the state. My Captain’s video, directed sensually and with choreographic precision by Justin McLean, contrastingly focuses in on the drowning and mourning of a beloved, playing out James Nesbitt’s death through a kind of baptismal metaphor, who was shot in a gunfight with police, dying in the arms of his (purported) lover Captain Moonlite. The spark for the video’s idea comes from this historic journalistic description of the event: “his leader wept over him like a child, laid his head upon his breast and kissed him passionately”. In the video, however, the “leader” figure is seen to be either drowning or violently summoning his younger companion in the water, speaking conversely to the brutal tyranny of the masculine in Australia’s present and past, while engaging in the symbolism of a watery rebirth.’

Marcus Whale today shares with us the aesthetic imagining of his recent single ‘My Captain’, a thrilling track which launched his upcoming solo record Inland Sea. The video, directed by past collaborator Justin McLean (who has been responsible for 2 videos for Marcus’ other project Collarbones), proves the perfect backdrop to a track which challenges in its underlying themes and shifting sonic landscape.
The challenging thought processes wind themselves through the very root of the Inland Sea project, a record (co-produced by Nigel Lee-Yang from iconic forward thinkers HTRK) that cannot be placed into any one genre, and one that Good Manners Records are very privileged to be involved with.
