Mauno is a band that toys with pop. Their new single ‘How Long’ is about the tension between the comic flicker that is life and the endless slog that it is to live. Singer Nick Everett was inspired by Townes Van Zandtʼs ‘Waiting Around To Die’, and decided to write something about the tenuousness and ingratitude of living.
The bridge pretty much sums up the song. It contrasts classic Boomer pop song themes (Love me ʼtil I’m old and grey) with the restless anxiety of millennials. It’s about worry. Worry about this dying planet, impending wars, and the price of avocadoes. It’s about the mortal dread and dry humour that hangs heavy over a culture immersed in late-stage capitalism. (Kill me, slowly, burn my flesh away).
When will it end, how will it end — with the peal of horns, the purge of fire, or the sprinkling of chili flakes over artisanal toast?
