MICHAEL CHAPMAN – WRECKED AGAIN – REISSUE ALBUM OUT 1ST JULY ON LIGHT IN ATTIC
Album Launch – 4th July – Fairfield Halls, Park Lane, Croydon, CR9 1DG
Although not as well-known as his peers (Roy Harper, John Marytn, and Bert Jansch) the name Michael Chapman is an important one in the lineage of English folk-rock artists of the late 60’s / early 70’s. Signed to EMI’s seminal stoner label Harvest (also home to Harper, Kevin Ayres and Syd Barrett), Yorkshireman Chapman recorded four albums for them between 1968 and 1972 which Light In The Attic are re-releasing as part of their Chapman Reissue Series. The next of which is Wrecked Again (hit back for a copy), Chapman has released over 30 more albums since.
Earlier this year he collaborated with Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore on a tour together and counts Will Oldham, Devendra Banhart, Laura Marling and Kurt Vile as fans of his work. Chapman tours solo regularly and seeing him live is a mesmerising experience as he builds hypnotic finger picked instrumentals on his acoustic guitar, combined with a back catalogue of songs that’s difficult to match.

Recorded at the noted Rockfield Studio, a residential complex-cum-working farm in Wales, Wrecked Again explores orchestration via Paul Buckmaster (Miles Davis, David Bowie) and The London Symphony Orchestra and production courtesy of Gus Dudgeon (Elton John, Bonzo Dog Band), but also explores a new sound influenced by Memphis soul. With a blend of electric and acoustic instruments, Chapman is found where he feels most comfortable: in-between folk and rock, contrasting the soft with the edgy.
