Yesterday saw something amazing happen on the Leicester High street. In the beloved Cookie Jar venue, Mercury Prize nominated and BBC Sound 2012 award-winning soul singer Michael Kiwanuka gave an exciting secret show that sold out two days before his name was even announced.
By The Rivers were in support as Leicester’s biggest new band, performing as a dress-down acoustic three-piece. Performing to the packed-out venue, they spurred the crowd on with some fantastic vibes. The whole venue was singing along to every word, hooked on the succulent Brit Reggae vibes.
Michael also brought the crowd into frenzy, more subdued than By The Rivers. They hung on every word and sang their hearts out whilst doing so.
This secret performance, organised by Flat Five Records (Kenworthy, The Cream Tangerines, Humble He) brought Michael Kiwanuka into a setting more intimate than what he’d normally play, which is why this evening was so special.
I’d really appreciate it if you could post some news about this secret gig, which demonstrated just how much the allure of live music still lives on!
