Ahead of European tour dates starting imminently, Moon Duo – the project of Sanae Yamada and Ripley Johnson – present the video for “Lost Heads” from their new album, ‘Stars Are The Light’, out now on Sacred Bones. In the “Lost Heads” video, director Andrew Knives creates a visually bright and colorful world emulating the track’s vibrant guitar work and capturing its dreamlike state. “The bright red 1985 Ferrari Testarossa seen flying through the vast scenery simulates the journey your mind takes when emerging yourself within the track,” says Knives. “The constant drive, as well as the speed in which you travel through the song, can be seen throughout. Both the song and video take you on a journey that starts within the mind, and sends you travelling into the depths of space.”

Taking disco as its groove-oriented departure point, ‘Stars Are the Light’ shimmers with elements of ’70s funk and ’90s rave. Johnson’s signature guitar sound is at its most languid and refined, while Yamada’s synths and oneiric vocals are foregrounded to create a spacious percussiveness that invites the body to move with its mesmeric rhythms.
With Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3, Spectrum) at the mixing desk in Portugal’s Serra de Sintra, (known to the Romans as “The Mountains of the Moon”) the area’s lush landscape and powerful lunar energies exerted a strong influence on the vibe and sonic texture of the album.
These are songs about embodied human experience — love, change, misunderstanding, internal struggle, joy, misery, alienation, discord, harmony, celebration — rendered as a kind of dance of the self, both in relation to other selves and to the eternal dance of the cosmos.‘Stars Are The Light’ is out now via Sacred Bones.
