My Morning Jacket’s Carl Broemel released single “Snowflake” on SPIN. The track comes off Broemel’s forthcoming solo LP 4th of July due out August 19 via Stocks in Asia/Thirty Tigers. Broemel tells SPIN, “’Snowflake’ is partly influenced by the interesting but questionable book ‘The Hidden Messages in Water’ where a scientist flash freezes water drops while participants think happy or sad thoughts. Positive thoughts made beautiful snowflakes and negative thoughts made messy ugly shapes.” The track is an instant download with album pre-order along with the first two singles “Sleepy Lagoon” and “In the Dark”.

Recorded in Nashville, 4th of July was co-produced by Teddy Morgan. Broemel also collaborated with fellow My Morning jacket members Bo Koster and Tom Blankenship, with Koster co-writing a few tracks. Additional guest appearances include Neko Case, Laura Veirs, Russ Pollard, Shelly Colvin, Richard Medek, and Jordan Caress. Recorded between album and tour cycles, the result is an album that examines the passage of time marveling at how different our lives look now from the engrained images of ourselves that we’ve held onto from the past.
