Mrs. Skannotto – ‘Outlier’ (Out Now)

Mrs. Skannotto – ‘Outlier’ (Out Now)

Mrs. Skannotto are formed fusing from reggae and third-wave ska to punk, which has served them pretty well for the Rochester, N.Y.-based ska. Their music is an exploration of divergent musical genres, the overall effect is alternative energetic not devoid of approval, coming close to mumbled acclaim. The six piece band certainly deliver a headonistic blend of brass, beats, guitar and punched for the most part Joe Harmon vocals. Mrs. Skannotto is: Alex Bochetto (drums), Dan Carter (bass), Evan Dobbins (trombone), Mike Frederick (guitar), Joe Harmon (vocals), and Justin Lloyd (trumpet).

‘Outlier’ opens with a single-proportioned title track which serves Mrs. Skannotto well, a signature tune perhaps, as if I know what that is, but as a song that characterises the album, then ‘The Outlier’ showcases their sound to good effect. ‘The Zealot’ impresses with a repeated “Long Way Down” lyric refrain.  The energy Ruts friendly drive of ‘.tribe’ succeeds as does the upbeat ska-punk of ‘Phantom’ in a fare amount of spades. Also happy when I hear ‘Entropy’ some seductive brass lines by Evan Dobbins and Justin Lloyd  used to winning effect, oh and there’s some rare guitar indulgence by Mike Frederick, but for the most part ‘Outlier’ is a band come team affair, solos are not the norm. It feels strange to be sitting here enjoying the sound Mrs. Skannotto conjure, their sound is to move or at least tap a foot too, preferably in a darkened sweat filled atmospheric basement venue, musical fantasies aside, it’s live where their at times anthemic songs become more vivid, bright and I dare say charged, lucky then, that the band have recently announced their US Tour (dates below). The album closes with un-doubtable rousing live-tested songs ‘Cadence’ and ‘I Don’t Care’ before the most memorable cover of Peter Gabriel’s ‘Games Without Frontiers’ which brings the 11-track album to a close.

The latest ‘Outlier’ LP stands up well, capturing one of the New York band’s most potent weapons, their live show, a good album that serves Mrs. Skannotto ably. 7.8/10
