Belgian producer & DJ, Mugwump performs an about-face with a new sound
and live show with his band and unveils the first extract of his second album
‘Drape’, due for imminent release.
’No Trepidation’ is a fast-paced post-punk/electronic hybrid and a punch in the
face of conformity, formatting and self-censorship.
Mugwump’s last 2017 video, ‘At The Front’ https://youtu.be/jFe_r_f91hc by directors Helvetica starred International contemporary dance and performance company Voetvolk www.voetvolk.be (Lisbeth Gruwelz) in a flamboyant adaptation of the internationally awarded Ah/Ha performance.
Mugwump now return with a new blend of contemporary dance and postpunk for the single ‘No Trepidation’, from the imminent ‘Drape’ album – out April 13/May 05). Here the young performer/choreographer Mercedes Dassy transposes fragments of I-Clit – her debut sold-out solo performance – in between improvised transcendences.
I-Clit’s modern, feminist manifest melts perfectly into ‘No Trepidation’, a song about the domestication of the arts, written and sung by Geoffroy Mugwump…both pieces share many common themes : emancipation, oppression, domination, exploitation, censorship, struggle and weakness.
Mercedes Dassy delivers a stunning solo performance, magnificently arranged around lights, images and music.
Mugwump ‘s album ‘Drape’ is released via Subfield:!K7 on 13 April / May 05 with International live showcases in London, Paris, Berlin, and Belgian festival appearance at Stoemp, Swim With The Current and Dour.
The result of nine months locked up with musicians Stephane Fedele (bass),
Thomas Stadnicki (guitars), Lukas Melville (drums) and a series of live shows in
Belgium, second album ‘Drape’ fuses the electronic with an occasionally heavy
rock feel and outstanding lyrics, all topped off with a French-Belgian-tinged vocal
and lyrical topicality. Music-wise it spans a breadth of influences from the
Interzone between Post-Punk, Indie Pop, Psych & Noise while Geoffroy Mugwump
lays down conscious, parlando-style, lyrics over nine songs ‘’soundtracking
our torments in the Age of Laissez-Faire and Aestheticisation’’.
‘Drape’ is the follow-up to 2015’s debut studio album ‘Unspell’, which boasted
many guest vocalists, garnered media plaudits across the board internationally
and was supported with live appearances at Benelux, French, UK and Dutch
festivals & venues.
Taking it further and morphing into a full live band with new members, Mugwump
released the ‘Metempsycho EP’ in November 2016 on which Geoffroy
made his singing debut. Driven by this live band experience, Mugwump’s new
album ‘Drape’ is set to be released in April 2018.
Borrowing his name from a character from William Burroughs’ famed novel
Naked Lunch, Mugwump is an elusive presence, a reputation preceded by infamous
DJ residencies at Belgian clubs and a long-standing recording relation
with Cologne’s Kompakt records, ongoing DJ support from Andrew Weatherall
as well as a large catalogue of electronic ‘disco-techno’ records, released on
leading labels R&S, Gigolo, Cocoon, Endless Flight, Eskimo, Permanent Vacation
or International Feel.
Mugwump is also well known for running the Leftorium clubnight in Brussels
where like-minded DJ guests such as Ivan Smagghe, Andrew Weatherall, Superpitcher,
Matias Aguayo, Optimo, Prins Thomas, Sascha Funke, Gerd Janson, Ata
or Roman Flügel share decks www.leftorium.be
In addition Mugwump runs his own Subfield label, together with indie powerhouse
!K7 and continues to break the mould of his genre-defying output, straddling
the divide between indie and electronic.
In between DJ dates in Belgium, France & Spain, he undertakes electronic remixes
(The Eyes Of Others, Ulysses, Soldout, La Jungle, Marie Warnant, Rotten
City, Ruf Dug, CEEYS) and has released his latest DJ compilation, Moving
House 2017 (exclusives from major electronic artists Andrew Weatherall, Tuff
City Kids or Roman Flügel , Christian S. , Cage & Aviary, Duncan Gray and Belgians
Front De Cadeaux, Arbeid Adelt & DC Salas)
He has recently joined the DJ roaster of Belgian National radio PURE/RTBF for
a monthly show.
Release party with an extended live set of LP songs plus surprise covers, oldies
and DJ sets @ Beursschouwburg, Brussels on Saturday April 14 2018. OM
