Mute Archive: Going back to the good ol’ days with Fad Gadget

Going back to the good ol’ days with Fad Gadget.

We’re celebrating the life of Frank Tovey aka Fad Gadget, the first artist ever signed to Mute and a once-in-a-lifetime visionary. A force of nature, he pushed boundaries in his music, his lyricism, and his live shows, which often found him hanging from ceilings, infamously tarring and feathering himself onstage, climbing on speakers and bar tops, and using microphones as whips, rarely leaving the stage unscathed. His legacy lives on not just in his recorded catalogue, but also in artists that have named him as a direct influence such as Depeche Mode, Erasure, Boy George, Liars, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
We’ve pulled these photos from our archives to share with you — we hope you enjoy and join us in celebrating the inimitable Fad Gadget.
