MUTUAL BENEFIT ‘TAKE AWAY SHOW’ FOR LA BLOGOTHÈQUE
FIRST UK TOUR CONFIRMED FOR MAY
LOVE’S CRUSHING DIAMOND OUT NOW ON OTHER MUSIC RECORDING CO.

Mutual Benefit recently played their first shows on European soil, including a sold out show at London’s St. John’s Church, in support of debut album Love’s Crushing Diamond. When they played in Paris, La Blogothèque was there to film the last song. Jordan Lee – the man behind Mutual Benefit – then invited the crowd outside to follow him and the band walking down the river, where they performed two more songs.

‘Statue Of A Man’, the current single, was performed inside the venue, while ‘Backwards Fireworks’ and ‘C.L Rosarian’ were performed by the river. Mutual Benefit is the latest in a long line of artists including Arcade Fire, R.E.M, Fleet Foxes and The National to perform for La Blogothèque. They are set to tour the UK in May 2014, dates as follows:

20 May – Manchester, Deaf Institute
21 May – Glasgow, Mono
22 May – Leeds, Brudenell Social Club
23 May – London, Union Chapel

Lee has spent the last few years moving from Ohio to Austin to Boston, and most recently Brooklyn, running the wonderful Kassette Klub label, touring with friends’ groups, and leading this amorphous project called Mutual Benefit. It’s a one-man-band or a sprawling collective, depending on where he is and who is around that day. After self-releasing two limited cassettes and playing scores of house shows, Lee completed his debut album Love’s Crushing Diamond (an Album Of The Day on BBC Radio 6 Music and awarded ‘Best New Music’ by Pitchfork). A record of lush, watery, pop songs, it was pieced together over the past several years and inspired by the kinetic energy, goodbyes, and blurred landscapes of life on the road.
The songs are heartfelt and powerful with Lee’s fragile and beautiful voice as the centerpiece. The recordings are an instantly engaging blend of high and low fidelity, mixing lush studio productions, featuring keys, guitar, violin and banjo, with clattering homemade percussion and found sounds.

Mutual Benefit visited the UK for the first time in March 2014. Their debut UK show sold out more than two months in advance, and they performed live on Lauren Laverne’s BBC Radio 6 Music show. The group’s first full UK tour has since been confirmed for May.

“loving, patient, warmhearted, unfailingly hopeful. . . seven gorgeous, baroque-folk songs . . . ”  Pitchfork [“BEST NEW MUSIC”] “The record’s seven song-suites somehow sound like intimate cuddling and expansive world-building at once” Stereogum [“BAND TO WATCH”] “superbly blurry, lush indie pop about life and love” The Guardian
