With one EP already under their belt, Emperor the Stag are a South Coast four piece with big ambitions, and now they return with their first full length album ‘Fantasy to Bleak’.
Containing some tracks held over from previous releases (‘Red Admiral’s Daughter’ a particular strong point), this also has some fresh tunes from the indie-rock spectrum.
The upbeat, driving nature of ‘Leaves’ holds a lovely looping guitar line through the verses before the pacy chorus kicks in (this track also holds the album’s title line, ‘From Fantasy To Bleak’. Later, ‘Glue’ is almost New Wave in its sound and a real departure from the rest of the album.
Arguably best song on offer here though is ‘Venice’, a shuffled snare drum driven rhythm overlaid with distorted and dischordant guitar lines.
