“New Gen is a shining light on one of the most fertile and exciting new music scenes this country has seen for years” – Q Magazine
“featuring a tracklist that reads like a who’s who of underground UK rap, ‘New Gen’ functions as a yearbook for one of the most exciting periods in the scene’s history” – Clash Magazine
““These are the Skeptas, Giggs’ and Dizzees of the future.” – Noisey
“Watch me fuck it up, blow the budget up, take the Grammy,” roars the Queen of UK rap Stefflon Don as she raps aside Abra Cadabra on their new track “Money Haffi Mek.” The track, which features two of the hottest new UK artists right now, is the most recent offering from the NEW GEN LP, a collaborative album showcasing the best of new UK grime, hip-hop, trap and new wave R&B, out January 27th on XL Recordings (with a Feb. 3 physical release in the U.S.)
This track shows Stefflon Don following her 2016 ‘Real Ting’ mixtape and single with a standout performance, spitting a statement of intent for 2017. Abra Cadabra continues the fine form that saw his “Robbery (Remix)” go from underground YouTube hit to “Best Track” at the 2016 Rated and MOBO Awards.
“Aside from Run the Road and Split Mics, this hasn’t really been done before, and they were ten years ago,” explains Caroline Simionescu-Marin (New Gen and XL a&r) in an interview with Noisey. Neither a compilation nor a collective, NEW GEN’s aim is to bring together the best of the UK’s underground music scene. Including over 17 artists, three of which made the BBC’s Sound Of 2017 list, NEW GEN grew from a playlist turned radio show into a project that time stamps a special chapter in British music, tying the strands of the NEW GEN movement into one cohesive body of work.
