WULF Release debut single ‘Fire’ on December 1st through BMG Chrysalis

“This is their year” – Phil Taggart & Alice Levine, BBC Radio 1
London three-piece indie rock band WULF release their debut single ‘Fire’ on December 1st through BMG Chrysalis. Taken from the band’s debut EP ‘Lairs’ (due for release Spring 2015) theirs is an emotive, confessional style of songwriting, rooted in the blues, in gospel and soul. Sonic references include Black Keys, White Stripes, James Vincent McMorrow, Cold War Kids and Band of Horses.

WULF are Joshua Bowyer, Jimmy Gardiner and Sean O’Neill. Originally a two-piece, who began life hammering pianos to tribal beats, which led to forming a band in 2013 and most recently joined by Australian guitarist O’Neill, who is known in his native Perth for his ambient, impressionist performances.

Developing a close relationship with James Kenosha (Dry The River, Pulled Apart By Horses, Chapel Club and RHODES) at his base in rural Yorkshire, the trio have been afforded the time needed to truly bring their plans into focus. Speaking of the process Josh enthuses “Suddenly we had this one guy who could create anything… You go in there with an idea about what you want to do and it’s no longer a contest. The right parts just came at the right points and suddenly we thought: this has really got something.”

An introduction to their method, WULF have deliberately kept their debut EP as broad as possible. Rooted in an approach – rather than a singular sound – it’s a concise yet hugely exciting declaration of independence. To Josh, though, the inherent mixture remains explicitly simple: “Gospel. Rocking. Piano!”

Forthcoming live show: November 4th at The Barlfy, Camden, supporting Southern.
