New Orleans Jazz Fest 2013 Lineup Includes Featured Acts Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Davell Crawford, Kermit Ruffins and Theresa Andersson
Whether it is the recipes for the gumbo or the jazz music, New Orleans has always been a place that remains steeped in tradition. However, three artists that have successfully incorporated their traditional big band sound in to a snazzy style that still feels fresh in 2013 are Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Davell Crawford and Kermit Ruffins. Preservation Hall Jazz Band was founded in 1961 to promote traditional New Orleans jazz in all its authenticity. Legendary players like Del McCoury Band, Steve Earle, Warren Haynes, The Edge, Charlie Musselwhite, Buddy Miller & Patty Griffin, Robert Plant, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Tao Seeger, all rooted in the formative jazz years, were its original stars. But with the band’s first 50 years behind them they are now looking forward to the next 50 and will be recording their first album of original music ever, titled That’s It! Which will be released on August 13th. Playing material both new and old at Jazzfest this year, you will not want to miss PHJB’s set on Saturday April 27th at 4:40 pm in the Peoples Health Economy Hall Tent.

Davell Crawford has been dubbed the “Piano Prince of New Orleans” as he brings equal exuberance to both modern and classic jazz, funk, blues, gospel, soul, American folk and touches of country-western. Growing up in New Orleans and spending many youthful days in Southwest Louisiana, Crawford’s influences run the gamut from Fats Domino to Sarah Vaughan, to Patsy Cline and even Liberace. He’ll get up from the piano, move to the apron of a stage, prance, joke and make folks feel at home. On his newest album My Gift To You (due out June 12th) Crawford remarkably embraces the full spectrum of his interests and influences as he reaches into his rich bag of resources and natural abilities. Kermit Ruffins needs only two words to hype a New Orleans barroom for one of his weekly shows, and this, his newly adopted slogan, sums up what this Big Easy ambassador is all about: We Partyin’! Also the title of his new record, Ruffin keeps the party going at all times, whether it is when he is playing himself in the HBO Series Treme, cooking soul food at his restaurant Kermit’s Treme Speakeasy, promoting the rights of New Orleans music venues, or doing what he does best—getting up on stage, entertaining people and having a good time. Playing new songs from We Partyin’! Traditional Style as well as some old stand-bys, you can see Ruffins play on Sunday, April 28th in the Blues Tent at 4:20 pm.

Theresa Andersson may originally be from Sweden but she has just as much New Orleans heritage as the rest of our featured artists, having begun to play in The Big Easy in the early nineties. Called a “a spacier, sultrier Feist” by Rolling Stone, Andersson incorporated the syncopated rhythms of New Orleans brass bands and a soft, percussive pulse to Motown-inspired tracks on her 2012 album, Street Parade. In the past Andersson has had her talents showcased Conan O’Brien and Craig Ferguson, and Nic Harcourt picked her KCRW “Morning Becomes Eclectic” in-studio as one of his “Top 10 Live Performances of 2009.” She also sang “Ladies In Blue” on Here Lies Love, the 2010 concept album by David Byrne & Fatboy Slim. You can see her on May 2nd at 4 pm on the Gentilly Stage.
