American singer-songwriter Wolfgang Valbrun continues in the footsteps of soul music’s greats. After moving to France in his teens, he found favour on the Paris circuit, before being recruited as lead singer of avant-garde UK soul and jazz band ephemerals.
With ephemerals he toured the world and attracted a fervent following, as well as piling up many millions of streams. Alongside ephemerals he also performed and wrote for French hip-hop and soul legend GUTS on the ‘Stop The Violence’ album, after a chance meeting when they played the same stage at Glastonbury.
2020 saw a musical reset for Wolfgang, making the decision to start writing and recording under his own name. Having dropped his debut ‘Love Yourself’ EP in 2023, with support from BBC 6 Music and KCRW in LA, ‘Almighty $$’ is the first single of 2024 leading up to the summer release of his debut album ‘Flawed By Design’. The LP is a powerful and introspective look at human frailty that straddles the lines between soul, jazz and rock.
“‘Almighty $$’ examines the relationship we have with money and religion and what we humans will do to get what we need”. Musically, the crack team that Wolfgang assembles for his live band provides a raw and driving track kicking off with strident 60s guitars, before killer horn and rhythm sections allow Wolfgang to go into R&B overdrive.
