Not Scientists – Destroy To Rebuild (06/03/2015)
Born at the end of 2013, Not Scientists are made up of members from French Punk Scene mainstays Uncommonmenfrommars and No Guts No Glory. none-the-wiser? How about their first EP, ‘Leave Stickers On Our Graves’, mixed in Puerto Rico by Jamie McMann (Dead To Me, NOFX, Swinging’ Utters…) w released in February 2014 on Delete Your Favorite Records (France). The follow up, a three track 7” was released in September 2014, with the same name. In support of both releases, Not Scientists hit the road throughout all of Mainland Europe with The Copyrights (USA). During their first year, Not Scientists played ninety-nine shows, visiting eleven different countries between Europe and North America, so if your still unaware of Not Scientists you’ve probably got yourself to blame.
The album ‘Destroy To Rebuild’ sound the part – both direct and melodic, with the music firmly influenced from UK bands like The Clash, earlier Cure even The Police which might explain Not Scientists accessible and confident sound, capturing the band’s live energy from the very off. “We wanted this band to sound different from anything we had ever done before. We bought vintage amps and from the start we went for super clean to crunchy guitar sounds. That really influenced our song writing because it changes pretty much everything, event the way we play our instruments.” Says vocalist/guitarist, Ed.
‘Window’ is an effective introduction to the band and their amicable sound, ‘I’m Brainwashing You’ lives up to it’s title, in general there is at least one thing to merit the majority of the 11 songs that make up ‘Destroy To Rebuild’. If their is a criticism, it’s that their sound puts you in mind of so many great bands, listen to the opening of ‘Wait’ screams of The Police, and I could make a case of The Ruts, SLF et al all seem to have a bearing, what helps and adds a weight is lyrically Not Scientists are deft, musically confident, also armed with good production throughout.
Suffice to say in 2015, Not Scientists are welcomed, hear ‘Destroy To Rebuild’ you’ll be begging them to stay. 8.2/10
