NPR Premieres New Video From The Zolas; "Ancient Mars" Inspired By Bewildering Disappearance

THE ZOLAS PREMIERE INSPIRED “ANCIENT MARS” VIDEO VIA NPR MUSIC

Today, NPR Music premieres the video for The Zolas’ “Ancient Mars.” Much more than a music video, it is inspired by a story that captivated the world: the disappearance of Elisa Lam, who went missing nearly a year ago on a solo trip to Los Angeles. Though The Zolas singer Zach Gray didn’t know her personally, Elisa was a friend of a friend, all attending the same University, and he was immediately stricken when the LAPD releases this bewildering CCTV video. “Seeing that video really hit me hard. It’s terrifying. I didn’t know her but she was so much like so many girls I do know and care about.”

Director Kevin Funk, Director of Photography Benjamin Loeb, and The Zolas’ Zach Gray wanted to capture Elisa Lam in, as Gray describes, “that feeling of freedom that only comes when you’re young and traveling alone. We wanted people to see her portrayed the way she was — a normal, bright, clean-cut 21year old girl — instead of a bipolar drug partier the way the media painted her in order to explain her death. This video exists in the dimension I wanted to live in.”
