The new single by Indie four-piece, The Only Ocean, finds childhood friends, Wesley Hill, Dustin Whalen, Shae Kakos, and Alex Burdess, The Only Ocean, has quickly become one of Southern California’s beloved. Ably produced by Jonathan DeBaun (The Mars Volta, Le Butcherettes, Antemasque) the new single should whet many a sonic appetite.
‘CUL-DE-SAC’, the first single off of their latest EP, ‘TOO’, “is a reverb-slicked anthem” no argument there, moreover, it’s more alt less rock, with bright production it makes for a good fit, collectively they conjure an unapologetic, transparent nature of the track. Contributing producers and engineers on the EP are Graham Ginsburg and Rick Mabery of The Barn Music Studio, with aforementioned Jonathan DeBaun at the helm, it must have felt like a crowded session, if all The Only Ocean band-mates and studio crew were all on call at the same time.
On reflection, it proves the too many cooks adage, at, in musical terms at least, is open to question, ‘CUL-DE-SAC’ may not achieve talk of any change of status of the ante, but back tracking a little, with some retweaked, the single sounds fresher more energetic than the sways of many out there. The Only Ocean’s ‘Too’ EP, on the evidence of this lead single alone make the forthcoming release one to seek. 8.2/10
