Today, Omar Apollo shares his Spanish debut “Frío” produced by Omar himself and Kenny Beats. Although the Mexican-American artist has sung in Spanish before, the new track is the first entirely in his native language and the first specifically steeped in Latin culture – fusing his signature heart-wrenching R&B with a sultry dembow rhythm. The result is an infectious anthem simultaneously fit for dancing at the club or crying in the bedroom.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the song, Omar says: “This was the first song I made fully in Spanish. I was in my hometown for my brother’s wedding, and I was at the attic where I used to live with six other people and where I used to record all of my early music. I was with my bassist Manny and my homie Tony and we just started making beats like we did back in the day. I got the verse and hook and then we stopped. Once I was back in LA I brought it to my homie Kenny Beats. The song is about not wanting to repeat the same cycle of emotions- but also about being stuck in that cycle too. Coming in and out of the cycle of a relationship.”

“Frío” follows Omar’s late-night television debut on Late Night with Seth Myers, where he performed an energetic rendition of standout track “Ashamed,” and arrives ahead of his forthcoming run of US and UK tour dates. The Speed of Sound tour will reach UK shores on the 21st November and see Omar perform six shows across the country, reaching London’s Heaven on the 27th.
Apollo’s latest EP, Friends showcases the seamless versatility he carved out on previously-released singles “Friends,” “Ashamed,” and “Trouble,” culminating in a vibrant and thoughtful body of work. On the project, the first-generation Mexican-American singer fluidly channels elements of jazz, R&B, funk, alternative, soul and pop music through his own lens, cementing his stance as one of 2019’s breakout stars.
