Recorded live to tape in Farleigh Studios, a place shaped by decades of musical history, the studio played a central role in the upcoming album’s atmosphere. Having hosted artists such as Van Morrison, Tom Jones, Flyte, Foy Vance and Ida Mae, the studio carries a reputation for drawing something deeper from the artists who pass through it.  The album was recorded with musicians Yardley has longstanding creative relationships with: Nick Pini on bass, Luke Potashnick on guitar, and Ethan Johns on drums and production. That shared history fostered a fearless environment, where improvisation led nearly every track and emotional weight was welcomed rather than polished away.

Speaking of ‘Domino (Punk)’ she says: “I LOVE THIS ONE! One of the older songs on the record but we’d played it live a few times and it had been SO fun. At the time of writing I think I was listening to a bunch of jazz and prog music, which doesn’t translate but I think it got me into a very loose and playful place. It speaks to a sort of craving for belonging, love, safety rooting, even if it’s just transitory.”

She continues, “When I heard this back for the first time I couldn’t help giggling, I couldn’t believe it was us, I thought it was another band Ethan had worked with! I’m so glad we recorded it; I think you can really hear our chemistry as a band and how much fun we’re having”

The result is a record that resists a single lane. Rooted in live performance and collective instinct, Diving The Unknown feels raw, expansive, and human. Additional contributions come from long-time collaborators Henry Rankin on strings and Laura Jurd on flugelhorn for the track “Joan”.

Diving The Unknown is the culmination of a lifelong ambition. “I’ve wanted to make an album since I was about eight years old,” says Yardley. “To finally do it, with songs I love and people I love, feels mindblowing.” It is also her most revealing work to date. “It’s scary to put something out that shows so many sides of who I am. But it’s honest. It’s people in a room, playing music, getting messy, and asking big questions.”

With Diving The Unknown, Izzie Yardley steps forward not with a polished mask, but with an open door.
