Out February 17th through Navigator Records, ‘Diamonds on the Water’ is the new treat of an album from Oysterband. The first collection of original songs in 7 years, it’s a country-folk-pop combination that’s easy on the ear and very well produced.
Swimming in harmonies and picked acoustic guitars, it’s a traditional throwback to the roots of folk (pun intended), complete with fiddle parts front an centre. Still, though, there is a pop sensibility that marks it out as immediately accessible.
Highlights include opener ‘A Clown’s Heart’ which starts things off gentle and smooth with some lovely vocal layering over the everpresent acoustic. Meanwhile, the pumping opening to ‘Spirit of Dust’ takes the pace up a notch without losing any of the flow.
Later, ‘Once I Had A Sweetheart’ brings a dirty blues guitar sound but remains distinctly folk – it’s this dedication to their sound that really makes this a top album. 8.8/10
