PALACE’s latest single, the ornate, broken paean ‘It’s Over’ now has an accompanying video – a viewing equally as delicate; watch the clip, which was directed by Maxim Kelly (Boxed In, Zola Blood, FEWS) below. When frontman Leo Wyndham wrote the track, he had no idea that it would become an unknowing prediction of the heartbreak to come and that the album – which tackles loss, love, and the shifting tides of human emotion with both power and restraint – would take on a darker relevance. “Two or three of the songs were almost predictions,” Leo says ruefully. “They are about things that had never happened to me in a relationship but have all kind of come true.”

Palace’s dark, enchanting debut album ‘So Long Forever’ is out now on Fiction Records, and has been getting some incredible reviews. The Line of Best Fit hailed it their Album of the Week, declaring it “one for the ages”, and Clash reckon it’s “a debut that will certainly strike a chord with many people far and wide”.
Leo had written the album about the recent separation of his parents and the death of a family member; songs of destructive relationships, painful splits and bitter regrets. Then, album recorded but the blows still fresh, he suffered a break-up himself. “’It’s Over’ came together during a difficult situation. It comes from feeling the need to accept what will be, no matter how bad things are. It’s the realisation that things that seem so solid can be so brittle.”
Clearly an album of dark magic, ‘So Long Forever’ is your cordial invite to Palace, this generation’s most moving evolution in alt-rock. They sing of heartbreak, family ructions, death and diving headfirst into relationships they know will destroy them. They make sumptuous, soulful rock music in a dour ex-munitions factory. They’re the fatalistic sound of the future.
It all adds up to a stirring, fine-crafted journey around the heart’s bruised chambers, and a cathartic turning point for Leo, buoyed by rapturously received summer appearances at Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds. “I have this sense of freedom, creatively,” he says. “When you suddenly find yourself on your own again out of a long relationship. It’s nice to be able to channel everything into the music. It helps a lot.” He grins. “I’m trying to be positive.”
Palace’s first show of 2016 was at the ICA, and, just like their previous show at Scala and their forthcoming Brixton Electric appearance, sold out at speed. The band will embark on a UK tour in November – details below. The album artwork – as with all previous artwork – has been painted by Wilm Danby.
