“Dry Food confronts the point it’s been evading: kidding yourself is no way to recover, and comfort offers little impetus to move on. Palehound’s discomfiting, unflinching debut suggests she knew it all along.” – Pitchfork, 8.0 review
“antsy and ambivalently sexy” – Rolling Stone, 4-star review
“… a dynamic new artist capable of embodying wide-eyed empathy and the all-consuming yearn of youth, while still demonstrating wisdom beyond her years. The most exciting part of all: Palehound is only beginning.” – NPR, First Listen
“The way some people have a way with words, Palehound singer/songwriter Ellen Kempner has a way with a guitar: Looped lines tumble out in the knotty configurations worthy of a sailor’s handiwork, or maybe of academic writing.” – SPIN, Album Of The Week
“Sweet with a lick of acid, Palehound has been astonishing us … with the kind of acerbic lyricism, gritty vigor and arpeggiated hooks that make her one of the most exciting new voices in indie rock” –PAPER Magazine
“ …tense and taut but still bends with explosive interludes; the St. Vincent comparisons aren’t far off.”– The Boston Globe
Boston’s Palehound aka 21-year-old Ellen Kempner has been making waves since the release of her debut LP Dry Food earlier this year via Exploding In Sound. The album has received accolades from the likes of Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, NPR, SPIN + more as it continues to gain international attention. Following a label signing with UK’s Heavenly Recordings, Palehound is nominated for three Boston Music Awards – New Artist of the Year, Rock/Indie Artist of the Year, and Female Vocalist of the Year.
