Sometimes you must go backwards to figure out what lies ahead. In the case of Jason Quever, his life making timeless guitar-based dream pop as Papercuts is about to take a quantum leap into the dreamier realms of psychedelic folk-pop. His glimmering new album Past Life Regression is his most precise yet, mapping the soundscapes of his journey so far and introducing apparitions of the passengers joining him along the way.
Past Life Regression was created shortly after Jason’s return to San Francisco’s Bay Area after several years in LA. Taking solace in his new surroundings, a flood of ideas and songs were written in a short period and recording the album was an immersive process, providing newfound focus.
“It’s been an intuitive journey,” Jason reveals, “the album’s melodic clarity comes from simple evolution and wanting to hear things back that hit more immediately. There might be a bit more confidence and less self-doubt clouding the recording experience. I used to work in a slightly depressive haze that I have moved beyond these days. I have found the way you feel while recording is inescapable when you look back at it, even if you might be blind to it at the time, or believe you’re working around it, your feelings always show through.”
The new single “Lodger” comes off like an instant Shoegaze classic, with shimmering farfisa keys, jangling guitars and dreamy harmonies. Jason’s songwriting, arranging, and production is immaculate, capturing attention from and securing work with dream-pop luminaries Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500) and Beach House, as well as Cass Mccombs as of late. Quever says of the track: “The song had a slight 60’s pop inspiration, and I wanted to see if I could pull off a freakout in the middle that felt like an epiphany. Lyrically it’s inspired by a memory of feeling like a fling is just sort of passing through your life, and wondering if thats all you are to them.“
In these unusual times (check out the album’s first single “I Want My Jacket Back” – an absurdist psych-pop take on his disillusionment with the US political system) Papercuts’ mood of longing and recollection is testament to Jason’s resilience as a true artist and that, even after six acclaimed albums including releases for Slumberland and Sub Pop, Jason still has plenty to say, and continually finds new ways to say it.
