Stream ‘Song For Zula’, taken from the forthcoming album ‘Muchacho’
Ahead of his one-off St Pancras Old Church show tonight, Phosphorescent is excited to announce a worldwide spring tour in support of their upcoming album ‘Muchacho’. Starting with a quick jaunt to SXSW, the tour kicks into full swing March 25th in Philadelphia, weaving it’s way across the country for a month before wrapping with a hometown show at NYC’s famed Bowery Ballroom. The band, a revamped 5 piece led by Matthew Houck, will then hop across the pond for a string of UK and European shows in May including London’s Village Underground on the 15th May. Full details of all the dates are below.
‘Song For Zula’. The first track revealed from ‘Muchacho’ is heartbreaking and revelatory, sonically rich and innovative. It’s a giant step forward for an artist whose career has grown from doing the hard work and honing his craft album to album, tour to tour.

And if you don’t believe a press release, please take the critics’ words for it:
“The sound is bigger, airier, and more mysterious than anything the band’s ever done… It is a stunning piece of music; it sounds like an allegory, like a dream.” Best New Track – Pitchfork
“‘Song For Zula’ feels like some sort of arrival for Matthew Houck” The Fader
“While it’s not necessarily a major accomplishment to make this writer cry at 7 a.m. on a Friday, this song just succeeded in doing so.” Nylon
“Best of all, Houck’s emotional fragility and lyrical nudity are back in full swing” SPIN
“A patient, yearning track that finds Houck adding a delicate string section and some electronic drums to his typically austere folk palette.” CMJ
“We’ll admit to not having been familiar with Phosphorescent’s work before this, but we’ll definitely be investigating it further now — this is really pretty, a widescreen melancholy epic underpinned by big synth strings and a gentle drum machine beat. ” Flavorwire
The new full-length album by Phosphorescent, ‘Muchacho’, is already described as “a clear departure from the honky-tonk classic rock of 2010’s Here’s To Taking It Easy, and an assemblage of underwater hymns redolent of both record’s spare, sometimes psychedelic predecessor, 2007’s Pride.” Read more details about the recording of Muchacho and a photo gallery of Matthew in his recording studio at SPIN.com.
‘Muchacho’ will be released in the UK 18th March on Dead Oceans.
