Curated by [PIAS] and its extended artist and label family, the event celebrates the broad and diverse musical culture of the Independent record company [PIAS] over two nights featuring The Fat White Family , one of this year’s most talked about new artists, Play It Again Sam’s Mercury nominated Ghostpoet and Balthazar, Trangressive’s Gengahr , Heavenly’s The Wytches and Teleman from the Moshi Moshi stable.
The Fat White Family
Emergent amidst a volley of tips and incendiary live performances late in 2013 the band quickly gained an early rabid word of mouth reputation before widespread acclaim on the re-release of their debut album ‘Champagne Holocaust‘ earlier this year. Shows in the US and a busy summer festival itinerary cemented that praise and has seen the band setting up their own label Without Consent for future releases.
Ghostpoet
Londoner Ghostpoet, aka Obaro Ejimiwe, came to the fore with his Mercury nominated debut ‘Peanut Butter Blues And Melancholy Jam’. The master of brooding and brilliant subterranean whispers, spluttering beats, that encompasses an absorbing sonic overview. On the eve of an imminent third album, mixing the abstract and the concrete with uncanny skill Ghostpoet brings his captivating musical cache to home turf and welcomes a new chapter to his repertoire.
Balthazar
Armed with two albums and primed with a third, this quintet have evolved from their debut in 2010 with its catchy, angular indie-pop through to the more sophisticated classic feel of their last album ‘Rats’ in 2012.Previously spotted in London with a couple of sold out shows back in 2013, their new material promises to enhance their reputation here in the UK.
Teleman
Moshi Moshi inhabitants, this four-piece have become on of the most understated, yet enthralling new bands in the country and it’s somewhat fitting they bring the event to a close. From their debut single to the Bernard Butler produced debut album ‘Breakfast’ earlier this year the band have garnered an array of acclaim for their sparse, welcoming minimalist synth tones that have seemingly seeped into a nation’s musical psyche. With slots supporting the likes of Franz Ferdinand and Metronomy and a string of summer festival appearances , 2015 looks set to continue Teleman’s upward trajectory.
The Wytches
Their arrival via several independent singles and a distinctly DIY spirit saw this Brighton based trio came to the attention of Heavenly Recordings in 2013. Having decamped to Toe Rag studios, the band quickly revealed their debut album ‘Annabel Dream Rider’ to an ever-growing fanbase this summer. An album that displays a broadness of influences, an accomplished dark and heady sound that embraces the black arts and the more extreme limits of rock, but which is never prescriptively macabre.
Gengahr
The new kids on the block, Gengahr have been doing it the hard way earning their stripes the tried and tested route with what appears to be a never-ending live itinerary. With just a single, ‘Powder’ to their name the band have appeared at every major UK festival this summer and look set to be one of the bands to look out for next year. Armed with killer tunes and coupled with burgeoning radio play and press attention, get in early to see what all the fuss is about.
