piri & tommy have today shared brand new single, ‘dog’. One of the UK’s most exciting and unpredictable acts, the duo returned this summer with latest banger ‘99%’, which was remixed by Higgo and saw piri & tommy also rework Lucy Tun’s latest single, ‘Come To My House’. piri & tommy have additionally confirmed details of new EP, about dancing – watch this space for more soon.
‘dog’ is cautionary dance-pop tale about dating and bad behaviour, with as much bark as bite. Having started life as a tommy instrumental in Australia – with the working title ‘Badoing Badoing’, inspired by the noises kangaroos make when they jump – piri dedicates ‘dog’ to a close friend whose boyfriend had been an acting up. “I’m sure we can all relate to the frustration you feel when someone is stuck in that position. I was venting over this very cute beat for some reason, and from my anger just half-yelled “you’re a dog!” At first I thought it was too much, but it’s actually an under-appreciated insult. We have been excited about this song coming out for a while now, and are so happy it’s out for the world to bop to. Woof.”
2024 opens a new chapter for piri & tommy, whose rise to date has been little short of remarkable. Independent, out of their relationship, and stronger than ever, theirs is an increasingly-clear vision always bound by the duo’s rare creative chemistry. piri & tommy famously first met on Tinder, with their love of dance music drawing on completely different backgrounds: Science graduate piri was working with the rest of her family in the local Asda when she matched with tommy, a music student and sometime-DJ in Manchester. piri & tommy formed a band and even bubbled together in a student house over lockdown, with viral hits like ‘soft spot’ sparking a rapid rise through the music industry (BBC Sound Poll, MTV Push, VEVO DSCVR, Radio 1’s Hottest Record Of The Year, and even their first charting single with ‘on & on’). Their debut mixtape, froge.mp3, was a vivid snapshot of youth culture and adjusting to life post-pandemic: as Pop’s love-affair with club music deepens, it has the increasing feel of a modern-classic.
Previewed by ‘dog’, piri & tommy’s upcoming EP – about dancing – was introduced by first single ‘99%’: a love-letter to the student house-party scene they formed in, and will always return to. Today, the pair are ambitious for timeless music that transcends short-term genre trends or the durability of an App, whilst still living and breathing club culture with a passion matched by few of their commercial peers. Theirs is a connection marked by mutual respect, and the understanding they bring out something special in the other (piri describes tommy as “a true humble genius”, with tommy introducing piri as “the CEO of melody”). ‘dog’ continues phase two of the piri & tommy takeover, a young duo firmly taking the lead.
