Pop’s most exciting duo piri & Tommy Villiers have today dropped their new single ‘lovergirl’. It lands alongside a Mario Kart inspired video featuring animated piri & Tommy avatars. The duo have also announced a secret pop-up show in London tomorrow in partnership with promoter and live music activists, Save Our Scene (details TBA on piri & Tommy’s socials).
A fun-filled UK garage track designed to make the dancefloor bounce, ‘lovergirl’ was written about the dissolution of a relationship and finding positives through heartbreak. As piri says: “Lyrically, lovergirl was written from the perspective of me singing to myself, writing this song felt so personal and uplifting. it’s about that feeling after a relationship where you reflect on how much energy and time you put into another person, it’s easy to get angry at yourself and see it as a waste of effort, but in this track i’m saying “no, you should be proud to be a lovergirl!!”
‘lovergirl’ is piri & Tommy Villers’ third single of the year, following vibrant banger, ‘nice 2 me’ and the explosive Hyperpop of ‘updown’. The latter arrived alongside a striking video subverting the peep-show dynamic, and was followed by piri’s pop-up shows around the UK with instant sell-outs at the likes of London’s Moth Club.
2023 will see piri & Tommy Villiers continue to forge a new path in Pop. After a dizzying rise – their first collaborative track was self-uploaded under two years ago – the pair dropped their debut body of work, froge.mp3, in October 2022. A vivid snapshot of youth culture, life post-pandemic and working things out in real-time, the project was greeted with widespread critical acclaim and saw piri & Tommy Villiers roundly hailed Ones to Watch: they featured variously on the BBC Sound Poll, MTV Push, VEVO DSCVR, Radio 1’s Hottest Record Of The Year, and even landed their first charting single together with viral banger ‘on & on’. Somewhere along the way, they stopped for breath too. Today, piri & Tommy Villiers are working on solo and collaborative music to come, with piri featuring on the new single from Skylar (‘Crocodile Tears’) and Tommy releasing his own collaboration with rising vocalist mustbejohn (‘To The Moon’). ‘lovergirl’ continues a journey from two individuals whose journey thus far has been anything but predictable, but are always moving things forward.
