Post War Glamour Girls @ Pop recs Ltd, Sunderland, 27.05.2014
Our friends in the south, have kept us informed over the last 12 months that Post War Glamour Girls have built up a formidable reputation within Leeds ever creative music scene, further afield many will recall the live performances alongside the wonderful PINS on their last tour. For WithGuitars it was a no-brainer, any hesitation persuaded by the new ‘Jazz Funeral’ single.
Sadly there was only 25 souls left to witness Pure Noise Records latest, seems the hordes that attended the early gig by Franz Ferdinand were unaware or the pressures of life, family, alcohol were all too much of a draw, which is a real pity. as the Leeds based quartet, after a late soundcheck, kicked in with broken guitars, bridges, refrains all wrapped up in an intelligent narrative. A real fusion of sounds, those around me were talking of Artic Monkeys, me and mine were musing of a cross with Pixies and Wedding Present (lyrically) with reference to The Birthday Party. Guess that’s alternative enough for most, it’s wholesome and desolate, their first impression live, it’s intense and tight enjoyment.
Live the songs of the debut album, ‘Pink Fur’ are gather more lower-fi attack live, rather than in studio (both are recommended). There’s a polished more honed urgent set, Post War Glamour Girls don’t play 4-4-2, instead they serve a varying music fare, melodies, bristle and sooth. that may well break into a meandering riff laden light guitar, a door to at least one serious lyrical observation. Easy like you find with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, very easy to slip and wallow again into well crafted alternative music, such is spell the four create. Songs like ‘This Land’,’Stolen Flowers Rust’ and ‘Service Station Blues’ captures a young, “fiercely intelligent band in their ugly element.” The afore mentioned ‘Jazz Funerals’ is a set high, just, that explores the fear of death and how “we (individually and culturally) deal with the inevitable. In typical Post War Glamour Girls’ skewed filter. A great night, at least all tonight were all definitely listening. 8.9/10
