‘Love Me To Death’ Album
“Love Me To Death has the same dangerous energy as Callaway’s debut. There’s an explicit message in each song, whereas before it was often a burst of pure rage; this time Callaway has channelled it into something more coherent, but still as bold and brave.” The Independent
Following the success of her latest full length album ‘Love Me To Death’, Queen Kwong (Carré Callaway) returns with a new track, a captivating video and the announcement of new tour dates supporting rock legends, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
The multi-instrumentalist has crafted a beautifully dreamlike single in ‘Raptures’, one that leaves haunting space for her lyrical honesty to take centre-stage. With a slow build and fragile yet assertive layered vocals, it draws in the listener before kicking back with an irresistible chorus hook, like St Vincent fronting a gothic incarnation of The Kills. Callaway worked alongside long-time collaborator Joe Cardamone of The Icarus Line to capture the various personal themes of the entire record, from mental health and vicious industry misogyny, to self-discovery and casual nihilism.
Callaway landed on the music scene after a chance meeting with Nine Inch Nails frontman, Trent Reznor. At 17, she was enlisted as a support act on the band’s 2005 ‘With Teeth’ tour, performing as a solo artist under her real name, then again as Queen Kwong on the band’s ‘Wave Goodbye’ outing. She also recently supported the band in Las Vegas over three consecutive dates.
Her fierce debut album, ‘Get A Witness’, was released in 2015, to critical praise, securing her a slot at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. Her most recent album, ‘Love Me To Death’, was released earlier this year, via Edison Sound, and in the interim period between releases, Queen Kwong has been developing and growing both on stage and off.
Callaway has been vocal about the industry and her experience of it from an early age, both positive and negative. She was also recently diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, an incredibly rare genetic disorder that affects the lungs. However, with all this she remains undeterred, focussing entirely on her music and the powerful emotional bond she’s able to create with it.
With ‘Raptures’, she’s not only cementing herself as one of the hardest working and truly honest musicians on the circuit but she’s defying the conventions she’s had enforced on her her entire adult life. With a beautifully cinematic video that sees her running through a dimly lit crop field, one can’t help but think of it as a portrayal of both her personal and creative freedom.
