Richard J. Birkin‘s beautiful new album, Vigils, is nearing its release date on March 11th (Reveal Records) and today we’re sharing the radiant, pulsing track, ‘Accretions’.
‘Accretions’ has undergone a process of revision from its original form as a gallery commission, and now features the luscious embellishments of the Iskra Strings Quartet who have played on recordings by influential artists including The XX, Radiohead and Johann Johannsson. The video is made by animator Christopher Boote using chalk, erased and blown across a black surface to create rotating patterns.

Much of Birkin’s recent work has been focussed on finding creative ways to challenge the standard interactions between artist and listener. With Vigils, he shows his strength as a composer, bridging the gap between contemporary and classic minimalism, his ideas developed from a variety of sources. Discussing Vigils‘ origins, Birkin says:
“The album started at my first studio in a cold old mill by a weir in Darley Abbey, just outside the city of Derby. It was permanently foggy, and the weir was blocked by debris and running fast where it could get through. I was re-reading Murakami’s ‘Hardboiled Wonderland & The End Of The World’. Darley Abbey really did feel like the shadowless town depicted in the novel – the old buildings, the river, the silence, the beasts. The piano pieces I started writing were my way of soundtracking this isolation. These are the ‘Vigil’ pieces, which were orchestrated later as the themes of the album developed.”
Birkin will be embarking on a series of live shows to mark the release of Vigils, please find details of these below.
