Robbing Millions – Dreams Like Photographs
“Oddly beguiling psych-pop” Clash
“Easygoing funk verses filled with gently swaying instrumentals float down into purely astral vortexes on the bridges, coaxing the listener to go with the flow of the trip.” Consequence of Sound
“Unlike anything we’ve heard in quite some time! Damn!” The 405
“a sound that is both danceable but also features some guitar chops and atmospherics (Scritti Politti by way of Mew?)” Brooklyn Vegan
‘Dreams Like Photographs’ is the new single to be taken from Robbing Millions self-titled debut album, which will be released by [PIAS] later on this year. In the vein of POND, Tame Impala or MGMT it’s an eminently danceable psych-pop track full of weird and winding twists and turns.
The accompanying video, directed by Marine Dricot, is a psychedelic visual feast; the oddball imagery complementing the song’s bewitching and unpredictable style.
The group, made up primarily of Brussels duo Lucian Fraipont and Gaspard Ryelandt, recorded their album during a 2-week stint in New York in 2015 with none other than cult wizard Nicolas Vernhes, known for his work with Deerhunter, Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective and The War on Drugs, behind the controls. Between mix sessions, they performed no fewer than 8 shows during the CMJ Music Marathon festival.
Further on the the live side, Robbing Millions have performed hundreds of shows throughout Europe, highlights including support tours for Metronomy and Balthazar, and amazing performances at Pukkelpop, Paleo Festival, The Great Escape and Leefest.
As well as taking inspiration from bands in the new psychedelic school as detailed above, Robbing Millions’ sound is also influenced by pop, rock, jazz and traditional Congolese music. These spread of influences coupled with Fraipont and Ryelandts unique vocal harmonies gives Robbing Millions a sound of their own.
Discussing ‘Dreams Like Photographs’, songwriter Lucien Fraipont pictures “a bunch a robots trying to dance like humans at a birthday party. They’re remembering good old times while trying to figure out what their recent dreams could mean. I tried to choose words that had this “futuristic nostalgic medieval vibe” I like a lot”.
‘Dreams Like Photographs’ is out now on all download and streaming platforms via [PIAS].
