Bulgarian singer-songwriter Ruth Koleva is preparing to release her sophomore album Confidence. Truth on March 30th. In anticipation, today she shares a new single and live video for “Didn’t I” with Ones To Watch. A piano ballad built on a bed of ethereal sounds, Koleva laments how we often long for the past – the places we’ve been, the people we have loved – but when we go back, it’s never quite the same. She comments:
“I wrote this song about nostalgia. Nostalgia on the past, all the times you thought things could’ve been different. It’s that moment, when you look back and think ‘It was so much better’ and then, you realize that nothing in the present is the same as your projection. I happened to move back to my childhood neighborhood few months back, and ‘Didn’t I get back home?’ was the question I’ve been asking myself ever since. Time changes everything and the only moment we truly exist is now.”
Confidence. Truth is a ten-track collection that features Ron Avant (Anderson .Paak) on keys, Jameel Bruuner (The Internet) on synths, and Gene Coye (Flying Lotus) on drums. A deeply personal collection of songs rooted in soul and jazz, the album features the work of the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and was produced by Gueorgiu Linev (Kan Wakan). Effortlessly shifting from melancholic studio confessions to epic, euphoric anthems, Koleva previously shared album single “I Don’t Know Why” which was met with a wide array of internet buzz upon its release.
Born into the hardship of post-communist Eastern Europe, Koleva quickly developed into a rounded artist. After multiple excursions into the local Bulgarian music scene and a stint at the Hollywood Pop Academy, she released her debut album and scooped the top prize at the BG Radio Awards in 2014. In the time since, she has shared the stage with ten-time Grammy Award winning jazz vocalist Bobby McFerrin and performed two sold-out concerts at Bulgaria Hall with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. Confidence. Truth mirrors the restless spirit and growth of Kovela herself as she flirts with the past, confronts her demons, and finds joy in rediscovering herself.
