Shed Seven’s 30th anniversary year has been a non-stop celebration. 2024 was ignited when ‘A Matter of Time’ became their first ever #1 album. It continues with today’s release of the orchestral reworks album ‘Liquid Gold’. The campaign has been full of highlights, including a phenomenal set at Radio 2 In The Park, a Radio 2 playlist and a Piano Room session, and Amazing Radio’s Track of the Week for the recent ‘Waiting For The Catch’.
The album’s profile has been boosted by a new ‘Covers Edition’ of ‘Liquid Gold’, which adds their take on six classic songs: ‘I Will Follow’ (U2), ‘Cemetry Gates’ (The Smiths), ‘You Can’t Do That’ (The Beatles), ‘Queen Bitch’ (David Bowie), ‘The One I Love’ (R.E.M.) and ‘Dead Flowers’ (The Rolling Stones) – all of which were recorded during sessions at VADA Studios.
As Rick Witter explains, “We had the idea of recording some cover versions after we had decided to release various different colours of the ‘Liquid Gold’ sleeve. The differing colours are a nod to classic albums of the past so we thought why not choose a few songs which we’ve loved since being youngsters. The idea wasn’t to pick the most well known songs by these great bands, but songs we love listening to. It was great fun recording them, as well as a bit of light relief. We wanted to make them as true to the original as possible but obviously with a Shed Seven edge.”
‘Liquid Gold’ sees Shed Seven collaborate with arrangers Fiona Brice (Liam Gallagher, Placebo) and Michael Rendall (who worked on both ‘A Matter of Time’ and 2017’s Top 10 comeback ‘Instant Pleasures’) to create rousing new orchestral takes on a selection of songs along with gospel singers and a brass section.
The album has been previewed by fresh takes on some of their biggest hits (‘Chasing Rainbows’, ‘Getting Better’ and ‘Speakeasy’), as well as ‘Devil In Your Shoes’ from 1998’s Top 10 album ‘Let It Ride’, and ‘Waiting For The Catch’, a duet featuring Issy Ferris of Ferris & Sylvester. It is now completed with favourites such as ‘Disco Down’, a bombastic ‘Parallel Lines’ and ‘Ocean Pie’ as well as the new song ‘All Roads Lead To You’.
Various ‘Liquid Gold’ formats are starting to sell out, but a selection remain available HERE. They include a natural coloured double-vinyl; a double-CD featuring a live album recorded at their landmark York Museum Gardens anniversary shows; and a hand-stamped ‘Bootleg Edition’ on both double-vinyl and a value-for-money CD.
There’s a lot to come from Shed Seven before their 30th anniversary year is out, beginning with a record store tour that begins in Manchester this lunchtime. Next up is a special run of ‘Change Giver’ album shows before their full anniversary tour gets underway, its finale being at the O2 Academy Brixton. Rick Witter and Paul Banks will also play two intimate acoustic sets in York just before Christmas. Almost every event is sold-out, very limited tickets are available HERE.
