SARAH NEUFELD PRESENTS THE BLACK GROUND EP
TWO NEW VIDEOS, HERO BROTHER BONUS EDITION
“Breathing Black Ground (Orchestral Version)” is one of three new songs released by Sarah Neufeld last week as part of her Black Ground EP.
The EP is streaming on her website and the three songs are also part of an expanded Hero Brother Bonus Edition now available digitally on iTunes and Boomkat. Sarah also has some words of introduction for the EP and is premiering a short docu-film made by her friend Jason Last that captures her recent Prague recording session and the Berlin sessions for Hero Brother from last winter.

Brad Todd artist and conceptualist extraordinaire (also in Sofa), created the austere and unconventionally apocalyptic diptych video for the EP’s title track, which features Neufeld on lead violin, with the FILMharmonic Orchestra Prague playing an arrangement by Owen Pallett of the song that originally appears on Sarah’s acclaimed Hero Brother album. “Breathing Black Ground (Orchestral Version)” was mixed by the one and only Tim Hecker.
Says Sarah about the EP; “I’m so happy to release these pieces into the wild. The Black Ground EP is comprised of 2 pieces from the body of work that created Hero Brother and an orchestral version of “Breathing Black Ground”. “Requiem For Douglas” began as a piece I wrote in collaboration with video artist Jason Last called Scalpel/Stradivarius. When my uncle passed away, the piece evolved into something for him. “Muscle Til Death” is the last piece I wrote before recording Hero Brother. It is very much a part of that world, but ultimately stands alone. The orchestral version of “Breathing Black Ground” came as an invitation from Owen Pallett to join an orchestral session in Prague. It was really exciting to shift the piece into the world of string orchestra, and such a treat to collaborate with Owen. Please enjoy! S.N.”
Now is a great time to discover Hero Brother as a digital album, as the newly released Bonus Edition includes the additional three songs from the Black Ground EP and is on sale at iTunes. The original version of Hero Brother is also specially-priced at iTunes. For DRM-free 320kbps or FLAC options, Neufeld has also partnered with the awesome UK indie webshop Boomkat:
