SG Lewis has premiered the video for new single ‘Meant To Be’, taken from his breakout ‘Yours’ EP (out now via PMR/Virgin EMI). ‘Meant To Be’ is an appropriately-titled move forward for SG Lewis, marking the young songwriter, DJ and producer’s first proper claim to the additional role of singer. A headline date at London’s Koko is on sale now for November 17th, with further appearances confirmed at Manchester Warehouse Project (he’ll also co-headline a Redbull show in Liverpool with Jamie Woon on October 7th). Recent single ‘Holding Back’ (with Gallant) was playlisted at Radio 1, 1Xtra, saw Lewis surpass 20 million Spotify plays and be named iTunes and Apple Music’s New Artist Of the Week.
Directed by Bob Jeusette and David Widart, the video for ‘Meant To Be’ documents the real-life community of Monster Mania, a stuntman show which tours around Europe and is led by two different families, from generation to generation. It’s a track which brims with confidence, coolly assimilating a love of classic disco into modern, soulful electronics (SG also worked on the track with long-time hero Chad Hugo from The Neptunes and Howard from Disclosure).
‘Meant To Be’ brings together SG Lewis’ ‘Yours’ EP, a collection that pushes much of what he loves into new shapes. From the brooding, nocturnal R&B of the title track (featuring Raye) to the more upbeat, infectious ‘Holding Back’, it’s all a long way from Lewis’ modest musical beginnings: specifically, making beats in his bedroom as an undergrad in Liverpool, and starting out DJ’ing in the city’s notorious club Chibuku. Much to his surprise, post-club jam ‘Warm’ snowballed internationally, becoming the most Shazam’d song of the year across US TV and winning SG vocal fans from Pharrell Williams to Lorde (it’s now surpassed 10 million streams). The last year or so has seen SG steadily hone his craft, sell-out extensive shows worldwide, and stop at festivals including Coachella, Primavera and Glastonbury (he even founded his first club-night, ‘Parallels’, at Phonox).
With remixes to come from the likes of Fono, Ta-Ku and Salute, ‘Meant To Be’ is the sign of an artist and producer who finds himself in precisely the right place and time – in front of the mic and facing the future.
