Silk ‘N’ Oak – ‘What They Said’ Single

“What They Said” by SILK ’N’ OAK will be released 15th of September 2017.

After a successful fifth East-Coast tour Silk ‘N’ Oak are gearing up to drop their second single, ‘What They Said’. The announcement comes on the heels of the Alt-Rock duo recording two singles with good friend Steve Robin and John Hudson (Mayfair Studios, London).

Silk ’N’ Oak – who have played at festivals like Airlie Beach Music Festival, Gympie Music Muster, Decades Festival, and Caxton Street Festival – hail from a small town south of Brisbane, called Boonah. They credit Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Arctic Monkeys, Mumford & Sons, sexy guitars, and Fenders amps for the way they sound.

The track may shock listeners that are familiar with their self-titled EP, but the boys say it wasn’t intentional. “I think it’s one of our most unique songs,” explains Ricky (guitar, and vocals). “Mainly because I came up with the melody without a guitar in my hands.”

“Working with John has been such an eye opening experience, and we’re truly grateful to the people that made it possible,” says Troy (bass, and vocals).

‘What They Said’ may feel different to their self-titled EP, but there’s no question that it’s the same band. Although the EP sits nicely in the Folk Rock genre, you can hear the slight developments of a broader sound in songs like ‘Dance In The Rain’, and ‘Life’s Too Short’, where a more electric sound is achieved.

“Our sound develops further every time we’re in a room jamming, or every time we hear a cool new track. This song is a perfect example of our development. We get excited when we listen to our newer music – we’re really proud of the songs we’re writing at the moment.” The song came about when Ricky found an old phone recording that reminded him of the Strokes. “It doesn’t really sound anything like The Strokes, but the original feel was a lot rawer. I wrote the lyrics to the completed music and then I had to learn how to play it and still be able to sing the right melody.”

Brothers, Ricky and Troy Saunders, formed Silk ’N’ Oak in 2013 and haven’t looked backed. They credit the countless jams at family gatherings for their desire to perform live. “Recording was probably the last thing we got to. A lot of bands nowadays build a following online before they hit the venues, but we kind of did it the other way round,” says Troy.
