NORTH AMERICAN TOUR BEGINS AUGUST 29TH | COMPLETE TOUR DETAILS BELOW
(August 13, 2014 – Toronto, ON) – SINGLE MOTHERS, one of Canada’s most ferocious young bands, will see their long awaited debut full-length Negative Qualities released on October 7, 2014 through Dine Alone Records in Canada and XL Recordings imprint HXC Recordings for the rest of the world. The lead track “Marbles” is currently streaming on Pitchfork, alongside a Pitchfork Rising feature interview with frontman Drew Thomson. Click here to listen.
Known for their dangerously explosive live show and the palpable tension that bleeds into their music, SINGLE MOTHERS shouldn’t exist and neither should their debut album. Led by mercurial troubadour Drew Thomson, the band was shakily hatched in London, Ontario, where it ran through a dozen members before finally recording its debut album last year.
Produced by Joby J. Ford (The Bronx), at 10 songs, Negative Qualities is an unrelenting behemoth of a debut album that was two years in the making; written across two provinces, initially started in Los Angeles then finished in London, Toronto and Upstate New York. An explosive mix of raw energy, high-end punk and intellectual rendering of small town frustration, the record represents a band pushed to their most savage state. It’s their pound of flesh slammed down on the counter as a raw statement and now, they’re looking to collect. As Thomson rallies “I am who I am” on Negative Qualities, one can only wonder if this is a declaration of acceptance or a derision of him and his band. As such, the album will either be the first of many or the band’s final record. Ultimately, it is up to SINGLE MOTHERS and their inherited behaviour to decide.
Comprised of Thomson, guitarist Micheal Peterson, bassist Evan Redsky and drummer Brandon Jagersky, SINGLE MOTHERS gained a cult following in 2012 with the release of their four-song S/T EP. Featuring the heavily buzzed about single “Christian Girls”, the first pressing of the 7” sold out in weeks. Buoyed by the response, SINGLE MOTHERS quit their jobs, gave up their homes and procured a tour van through money willed to them by a deceased grandparent. Although they had little touring experience, they booked six weeks of DIY shows across North America then hit the road with TITLE FIGHT for thirty-three shows that fall. By year’s end, they had earned numerous major label offers, followed by praise from Pitchfork, The Guardian, The New Yorker, BBC Radio 1, The Fader, NME, Alternative Press and Brooklyn Vegan to name a few, as well as landed coveted support slots with QUICKSAND and THE BRONX.
SINGLE MOTHERS will be touring across North America this fall in support of their debut LP alongside Montreal guitar and drum duo SOLIDS and Toronto-based punk rock outfit THE FLATLINERS. The Canadian portion of the tour kicks off in Victoria, BC on September 12 and wraps up in Guelph on September 27. For complete tour details, see below.
