“We built it from scratch; every drop of sweat went into making something we’d be happy with, and we did some work on ourselves in the meantime too,” reveals sittingthesummerout vocalist Samir Batista of their sophomore EP ‘Brick and Mortar’. Hailing from Milan, Batista named the act in 2015, following a difficult Summer, which he reveals “cemented the concept that summer, as a season, wasn’t meant for me.” Completed by Dimitri Sironi and Luca Della Foglia on Guitar, Andrea Daniele on Drums and Cristina Lietti on Bass, sittingthesummerout play a well-crafted, atmospheric take on post-hardcore, blended with vocals that flit between spoken word, frustrated screams and evocative singing, and will surely resonate with fans of Hotel Books, Movements, La Dispute and Brand New. A Song Which Made You Want To Make Music: – I’m going to go ahead and say “Stockholm Syndrome” by blink-182 is one of those songs that makes you think “damn, I really want to write music like this”.

Best Album Ever Written: – Always the toughest question, isn’t it? I tend to say The Flatliners’ “Cavalcade” is my favorite record as it is perfect from beginning to end. Melodic punk rock the way it should be done. If it came down to choosing one between the band, it’d probably be blink-182’s self-titled or Brand New’s “The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Of Me”.

Craziest Moment You’ve Experienced In The Band: – Last April we were in two cars driving to a show. Luca (guitars/vocals) and Andrea (drums) were in one of these, and Cristina (bass) was driving. They got to a rail crossing, and living in the city, Cristina hasn’t seen many of those. The bars were up, so she assumed she could drive through. Turns out the train was just about to arrive. Luckily she noticed in time, but not before getting quite scared for a second.

Deepest Lyrics One Of Your Songs Features: – I feel really close to the lyrics on our first EP’s opening track, “Wearing Black In June”. The last part goes “You can’t begin to imagine how much I’d love to tell you the ghosts won’t come back, and that I’m not haunted by the ghost of you. And I’m a liar, a hypocrite, but I’ve never lied to you and I’m not going to begin now.” I feel like that could be it.

Easiest Song You Wrote: – “Fatima” from our first EP came out pretty quickly, Luke came up with the melody for the chorus and the intro in a matter of 20 minutes and that song is mostly about those two parts. Well done Luke.

Favourite Show You’ve Ever Played: – We recently played the release party for our brand new EP “Brick & Mortar” and it was great. Lots of friends, we reckon we put on a good set, and we were finally able to showcase the songs we’ve worked on this whole year. That’s the one.

Guest You’d Most Like To Feature On A Your Record: – Dan Campbell from The Wonder Years would be incredible, I’m a great fan and his voice is just fantastic.

Happiest Moment In You’ve Experienced In The Band: – I’d say the big group hug right after we finished playing our very first show almost two years ago. But we’ve had some other great moments along the way too!

Interesting Fact About One Of Your Members: – Andrea’s memory isn’t the best, and although he never forgets his drum parts, I bet he couldn’t quote any of our songs’ verses. In his defense though, they’re all quite long verses!

Jokes You Have In The Band: – I tend to never bring water to practice (which I should, since I am the vocalist), so I always steal Dimitri’s and he gets quite mad at that. Keeps threatening he’ll send me an invoice some time soon.

Kicking Off Your Set Is Best With Which Song: – We’ve tried quite a few, but right now we really like opening with the interlude on the EP “Dry, Dry June” as a backing track and then jumping into the main single To Those Concerned. Hitting heavy immediately.

Longest Distance You’ve Travelled To Play A Show: – We still haven’t gone too far, I think the farthest would be something like 300km away from home.

Most Inspiring Musician You’ve Ever Experienced: – I’ve had the luck of meeting many great musicians who are definitely an inspiration. Tom DeLonge is a crazy man who’s following his dreams (although I’m sure he’s ticked off quite a few of the things on his bucket list) and always wants more.

New Band You’d Recommend: – What We Lost is an amazing post-hardcore band from Italy, they just released a new single called “Beds” which is incredible. Check it out.

Opening For This Band Would Be Ideal: – We would love to open for Movements, they play music similar to ours and put on a great show.

Place You’d Most Like To Tour: – I’d like to be able to tour through the EU and the UK as soon as possible!

Quote That You’d Like To Pass On To Readers: – There is one madman who lived almost a century ago named Jack Kerouac. His work fascinates me, and this is one of my favorite quotes from his most famous book “On The Road”:
“[…]the only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centerlight pop and everybody goes “Awww!”

Reason For The Title Of Your Recent/Forthcoming Release: – “Brick & Mortar” took a large effort from us. Almost like we were slowly (and literally) building ourselves foundations for what comes next.

See Us Live At: – We’re playing a couple of shows in Italy before the year ends and there will be more next year, plus hopefully our first UK tour in the spring.

The Old Days Of Music Were Better Than Those Current,  do you agree: – Hell no. There are so many incredible bands out there that just need to be heard. There’s something for every ear.

Unusual Merchandise: – When we ran out of copies for our first EP, we printed these small cardboard squares which had QR codes to download our first couple of releases for free, and gave them away with a Milan-themed spoof of the classic American Football (the band) album cover.

Variations You’d Like To Do On Any Of Your Songs: – I’m a big fan of “Wearing Black In June” but the song itself could be much better, we could definitely work on it and create a new version in order to keep it in our set for a long time.

What Bands Have You Seen Live and Regretted: – I fell in love with The Chainsmokers this year and went to see them live. Terrible, boring show.

X-rays or any other treatments needed for band related injuries: – Haven’t had too many injuries luckily, mostly just Luca and I banging our teeth on mics and Andrea cutting his fingers open while drumming.

You could have written any song in history, which would you pick: – “Chelsea Hotel N. 2” by Leonard Cohen. That man was a poet.

Zoo animal that best describes the personality of your band: – You should see the food we eat before practice. Nobody in their right mind would eat that before playing/singing for 3 hours. We’re definitely piglets.
