PRAISE FOR SLAVES
“This pair are one of the most exciting and forward-charging rock bands currently active” – The Line of Best Fit
“Musically, ‘Acts Of Fear And Love’ is the most accomplished of Slaves’ three albums, switching things up and pulling off new sounds without losing sight of the band’s DNA.” – NME
“…it’s impossible to deny it is blazing with confidence and a witty, abrasive humour. What we loved about Slaves when they emerged into the DIY punk scene has returned into the mainstream, and about time too.” – CLASH
“The spirit of Ian Dury lives on in their witty observations of 21st-century living, not to mention their irresistibly rough swagger.” – The Independent
“Slaves is, all things considered, a pretty apt name for a band that represents a genuine alternative to much of what is subjugating about music, and life today.” – So Young Magazine
Hot on the heels of their third UK top ten album, Acts of Fear and Love, Kent duo Slaves return with new single and video, ‘Magnolia’, premiered via NME. The track comes just before the pair head out on their biggest UK headline tour to date.
A slab of catchy, grungy guitar pop, ‘Magnolia’ is both a sneering take down of suburban consumerism, as well as a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the bland and ubiquitous paint which has found its way into so many UK homes. The video finds the band – Isaac Holman (vox, drums) and Laurie Vincent (guitar, bass, vox) – indulging their inner painter/decorator, giving the audience a little glimpse into what their life may have been like if they hadn’t pursued their career in music.
Released in August this year, Slaves‘ acclaimed third album, Acts of Fear and Love, reflects that fear and love may actually be the biggest motivators in the world at the moment. Following their Mercury-nominated top 10 2015 album Are You Satisfied? and 2016’s top 10 album Take Control, the band have opened themselves up to new territory. The album’s title is inspired by a comment once made by drummer Isaac Holman‘s college teacher – “There’s no such thing as hate – just acts of fear and love.”

Working with previous collaborator, producer Jolyon Thomas (Royal Blood, U2) in Brussels, the band opened themselves up to a new sonic territory. Not concerning themselves with other people’s expectations of what a Slaves album should sound like the band have experimented with their style, without any boundaries; embracing pop song writing and tender moments alongside the more traditional hardcore riffs and scream-along choruses.
The band have just completed an extensive US tour (including playing Cal Jam this month) and are in the middle of a month-long European jaunt before hitting the road in the UK for what will be their biggest run of shows so far, with many of them already sold out and culminating at Alexandra Palace.
Acts of Fear and Love is out now via Virgin EMI / UMusic EMI.
